Andrew changed my oil for me a couple of weeks ago and we tried to change the filter at the same time but couldn't manage to get the housing off.
The biggest socket we had was 24mm and wasn't big enough, we tried pliers, grips, turning the whole housing by hand but it would not budge.
What I need to know is what I need to get it off (what size socket? 25mm? 27mm?) and should it really be on THAT tight?!
also, is it alright to change the filter after the i've changed the oil, while the engine is full of oil? or does it have to be done when its drained? am I likely to lose much?

I am almost certain its a 27mm socket. Don't go nuts when you tighten it back up it is only plastic after all. They only need nipping up, just don't forget the rubber seals. I always clean up the housing when I have finished and give it a quick check the next day or so to confirm its not leaking.

I think you may have to drain it, and the oil probably needs replacing again due to mixing with old oil in the filter and going through a old filter won't do it any favors 2bh. I think it must be differnt on your engine but on a 2.0 I use a chain grip to twist the filter off.

i would have to agree that the oil will need changing because the filter wasnt done!

in fairness the car did less than 40 miles after the oil was changed before it was garaged so I think I'll just replace the filter tbh.
someone must know for sure what size I need?

You'll have to drain it to change the filter. Or you'll have 5 litres of oil down your arm!

You can change the filter without dropping the oil. You might lose a bit that is held in the filter housing but it will top up with what you had left over. The only way you will lose all the oil is if you have the engine running, as most of the oil is in the sump and unless you can defy gravity, it won't run upwards.
As people say, it's 27mm socket and long extension.
I did mine a couple of weeks ago and the filter was held quite tight inside the cannister. Don't be afraid to pull on it quite hard to take it out.

Might be worth parking on a steep hill to minimize spillage, and you will need to top-up afterwards.
