Folding motor / gearbox unit inside the mirror will be rusted up, common problem Wink

Its a strip it apart, clean up & rebuild job.

Pack the motor / gearbox unit with Vaseline on rebuild to prevent it happening again in the future.

Will it be likely that both of them have rusted up?? Confused

try squerting some wd40, to see if you can loosen em up, my GTi HDi drivers mirror would not budge, so i squirted it, now it moves freely (not electric folding, but they still fold in)

Do the mirrors still move about, ie angle? Wouldn't have thought both would fail together?

I think you underestimate how s**t those mirrors are, I had to replace 3 in 2 years on my 180.

Had a look at the wiring digram in Haynes. Fuse MF04 (70A) MF07 (30A) in engine fuse box and fuse F12 (30A) in passenger fuse box are for the mirrors. The manual doesn't cover GTi but I'm guessing that they will be the same.

By the look of it, it's a separate motor for the mirror adjustment to the folding function.

think what steve meant is do the mirrors still fold in if you push them by hand..ie are they the mirrors off the 180 and not normal gti gloss mirrors thats been swapped over

well my mate said this because they dont have carbon caps on Confused but he pushed them a bit and they didnt feel like they were going to budge. we didnt want to damage the motors if they are actually 180 mirrors.

i think you should still be able to fold them by hand as if someone brushes against them, they have to be able to move without breaking, other wise you would have to replace them every time someone knocked them, ill see if i can get a part number off mine, that way you can compare.

if you send me the last 8 numbers from your chassis number (located in the v5c) i can check servicbox for you.

Dont folding mirrors have different wiring? Could check that if so to see if they are folding ones.

Mine have been fine since I repaired them Laughing

Cheap spares or complete mirrors are hard to find, they normaly go for silly money. ive got enough bits for a couple more rebuilds if needed.

I did have the pcb burn out on one before.
