I have just done the first oil and filter change on my 180. I put just over 4.5 litres in and thought I'd check the level - the dash has six squares which means it is full! I thought they were supposed to hold 5.5?! The dipstick is showing that the level is above the maximum mark (but I have a feeling that it could be the wrong one). Opinions?

always depend on the dipstick to check the level of oil, because the digital one can not accurate sometimes, does it blink with the (Max) on the right,or not?

No, it doesn't flash. Just have the six squares up for 10 seconds, with the min and max illuminated. So that would say to me it is at the maximum level, but not too high

Don't use the digital one, use dipstick.

Is the car level?

You should only have 4.5 litres in there... Any more and it will swell and blow out the gaskets. The dipstick is the best indication obviously but wait until the oil has settled in the sump before reading - it will take time to settle after you have just put the oil in or gone for a drive...

A dipstick is a dipstick... If you don't know what it looks like or where it is on your car. Don't try a DIY oil change, or even better, don't own a car.

It is a possible question on the drivibg test nowadays. Simple basic knowledge.

I know what a dipstick is. I also know that different engines have different dipsticks so "a dipstick is a dipstick" (as you put it) is not correct. I'm just trying to establish if I have the correct one for a EW10J4S engine as, if it isn't, the reading is likely to be false

According to the owner’s manual the regular 2.0L engine found in the GTi and the CC requires 4.25 litres of oil when changing the oil and filter, and the GTi180 requires 5.3 litres of oil for the same task. The manual is also quite strict on the use of 5W40 synthetic oil only for the GTi180
