Apologies if this topic has been aired before - a search has not revealed anything.

Wife's 206 1.4 LX (2001) manual is difficult to engage 1st and 2nd gear. Having had a couple of 405s, I'm aware of the effect of worn linkage, so bought a complete set - now the dilema!
The research I've been able to carry out suggests the gearbox is MA, but the long linkage bar of the set on the car looks more like the BE4 - it doesn't have the extension bits beyond the ball joints that the MA has. The code on the gear box is in a totally different location to those quoted for either type of box - the code is 20 CF 09.

Now, that's all coming from the position of believing it is the linkage that's at fault, but each of the joints are as tight as a drum - smooth movement and not even a hint of wear. But, the selector lever on the back side of the gearbox both rocks sideways by about 2 - 3 mm, and can push in/pull out of the gearbox by about the same distance, so I feel it could be this that's the problem

Don't really want to invest time and money until I have a clearer picture, so anyone any ideas? and if it's a gearbox problem, is it fixable?

Check the pivot from the gearstick linkage bar, to where it joins the gear linkages. Its a metal bracket, with a white plastic ball inside it. Sometimems the nut holding the white ball can become loose.

Thanks for rapid reply - I'll check it tomorrow and feed back.

The shape of this end of the gearstick linkage bar is definitely BE4, which is quite different to the MA end, although this fitting looks common to both.

What I didn't mention in OP is that every now and then, the gear lever "clicks"/registers as though the gear selection had been positive for 1st, 2nd, and reverse, but no drive - just as though one of the ball/socket connections had popped off - but then select 3 or 4th, and it will then go into 1, 2 or R quite OK

1.4i= MA box.

Make sure the right gear oil is in there; Total BV 75W80. Otherwise forget it.

MA box seems to concur with my "research", but did you arrive at this because that's what Peugeot model spec says it should be, or by translating the code stamped on the box itself? Are there any other features that clearly mark the box identity?
I'm still puzzled since if definitely MA, why BE4 linkage (gear stick and rods)?
If it's been replaced at some point, is was quite a long time ago - or does it not matter as they are interchangeable?

Sounds like the wrong linkages are fitted which could explain the odd behaviour. Don't know.

I think if you look at the 5th gear cover (on the end of the box with the small rubber gasket),
if it's held-on with 3 bolts it's MA, whereas if it has 8 or so bolts it's BE4.

Hope you sort it.
