I've got a new job a 30 minute journey down a dual carriageway so it's diesel time. The second hand 206s with 40,000 miles for about £3500 at a haggle look a steal but are they any good? How would the ride be 40mm lower? Has anyone had any successful/unsuccessful remaps? I only want to boost bhp to about 130 so could mpg remain the same? Any answers are welcome

The general consensus is if your after a diesel get the 2.0 hdi, they are bullet proof and so long as there well looked after/serviced will go on forever.

Take a couple of minutes searching on here about the 1.6 hdi engine and im sure it will persuade you to steer clear of them.

Im not saying there all bad, just most Laughing

I got a 2.0 HDi, on 130k with full service history and its really good on fuel. I travel 25-30 mins to work 50/50 duals & motorway too, i put £20 of derv in and get between 140-150 miles iirc, if driven sensibily of course! Compared to the 100 miles off £20 on my old fiesta zetec S its pretty good!

Dont get the 1.6 unless you know its had all the common faults fixed otherwise be ready to get a**e raped on repairs, play it safe and get the 2litre hdi instead bulletproof engine.

As above, but remember that people only post on forums when experiencing problems! That 1.6hdi unit is in so many cars (Peugeot and non-Peugeot), that it's going to have a greater number of complaints made about it.

As far as I'm aware, the main problems these have (that cost £££) are DPF and the Dual Mass Flywheel.

Someone like yourself who is looking to do lots of motorway journeys shouldn't experience any DPF problems until the Eolys fluid runs out about circa 60-70k, at which you'll have to top it up (£100-odd). When the DPF needs replacing, that'll set you back £1000ish, but that should (depending on where the car has lived, and how it's been driven) take a little longer. It's worth looking into DPF removal and remap if this ever becomes a problem, since a reputable tuner will be able to do this for £300-£400.

The DMF set up is quite costly to replace (mine cost £850), but again these will last depending on how the car is driven; hard launches, riding the clutch, low-end pulls will all compromise the clutches life.

Other than the DMF (which I think was due for replace anyway - it had done near enough 35-40k stop-start miles), I have had no problems with mine at all. It's powerful and returns 60mpg EASY. The figures don't do the performance of this car justice.

I've got a 2.0 HDi on just short of 146k on the clock and still going strong, plenty of service history, really good on fuel (from 1/2 of a tank to drop to 1/4 of a tank has lasted 2 weeks of 30 minutes motorway driving and 50mph roads everyday) doing plenty of miles per week, they're highly recommended IMO just so long as they've been looked after well by the previous owner(s)
Get off the bandwagon, and put down the handbook.

206 + diesel = 2.0 HDI everytime.

good call but you rarely see any complain from the 2.0HDi drivers, how weird is that?

If you point was true, we would see a similar number of posts about the 2.0HDi. (Remember only people who have problems with the 1.6 on here are 206 owners.) Yet we don't.

At the end of the day, people with the 1.6 explain how fantastic they are. Until one of the big three problems arise.
Another one is to argue the point that it has more power and is therefore an obviously better model. Power isn't everything, and if you added a FMIC and a different map to the 2.0. Then you are roughly the same level of car, without the likely issues of the FAP, DMF or Turbo failure.


Out of pure curiosity; what are the MPG stats on the 1.6? (realeased from Pug, not what owners have noticed.)

The 2.0 HDI has proven time & again if its looked after it will easily do 400k + miles.

Turbo going bang

All reasons to avoid the 1.6 HDi / DV6. What you could potentially end up shelling out in repairs will offset against any savings made by increased MPG over the 2.0 HDi / DW10.

5mpg... What thats... A saving of 1p per gallon.

£6.35 a gallon.

2.0HDi Price per Mile = 6.35/53 = 11.9924
1.6HDi Price per mile = 6.35/58 = 10.9586

Pointless to even worry about it. Average of 15,000 miles a year = total extra cost of £150pa.

Yes the 1.6HDi is a 16v.

Cant fault those figures! You'd spend over £150 a year fixing the 1.6 Razz
