Hi All,

Just bought a 2004 206 gti last week (137 bhp version).

Had to drive it in start-stop traffic for the first time today, and noticed the clutch pedal is very sticky/notchy.
It's particularly bad around the biting point, which makes it difficult to drive smoothly!

Any ideas?

I dont know your car have hydraulic clutch or cable operated clutch but if cable operated problem could be cable's itself.

Just had a look - it's hydraulic.

When I push the pedal in and out there's a definite creaking noise too.
Can't tell if it's coming from the pedal or the gearbox end though.

is the fluid level ok? if so could try changing the fluild or if if still does not work you may have to change out the master cylined as the internals can wear and make the pressure drop as you depress the pedal. (£10 for the cylined off a breaker)

Yep RHD ones. LHD GTI's are cable.

Is there any way of checking whether it's a dodgy piston/cylinder without taking it apart?
And is it more likely to be the master or slave cylinder?

More likely the master attached to the pedal. That would be the cheapest place to start. I think you have to remove the box to change the slave. If you have a Haynes manual it tells you how to remove and re fit. It says it's do able for a DIY machine.

Nope the slaves outside the box pretty simple to change 2 torx bolts and the hydrolic fluid pipe. Think i paid £23 for one from peugeot a few mo ths ago.

Location: Taking a gearbox off somewhere


I took the box off my sisters 206 1.4 that had a similar problem, it was the release bearing not sliding properly on the gearbox shaft and sticking.

Bu99er - I was hoping it wasn't going to be the clutch bearing!

How hard is it to get the box off?
On my last car you had to drop the whole front subframe...

I suppose I'd better buy the Haynes manual!

Not a difficult job, can be done without touching the subframe with enough patience.
