I got someone to push the pedal while I had a listen.
The noise is definitely coming from the engine bay, and I'm 99% sure it's coming from inside the bellhousing.
Picked up a Haynes manual yesterday - it makes changing the clutch sound easy 
Going to pick up a clutch kit today and have a bash at it over the long weekend.
I'll let you know how I get on!

If you take the airfilter housing out, you'll see the slave cylinder on front of the gearbox. Listen for a creaking sound when the clutch is pressed. Mine was changed as well as the clutch, my mechanic then told me my clutch was fine, and the cylinder was leaking. My symptoms were a sticky clutch, high bite point and juddering when pulling off. Might save yourself a lot of work, and save £150!

Generally, if the clutch isn't slipping, it's not at fault

I'll have a look at the slave first then.
With any luck it'll just be that and I can get a refund on the clutch kit!

Stuck a new slave cylinder on today, then spent all chuffing afternoon trying to bleed it.
The damn thing's still full of air and won't pump any fluid!

Turn's out dedication's what you need! (and a pair of safety glasses next time after getting brake fluid in my left eye...)
Don't you just love it when these half hour jobs turn into 6 hours of swearing.
Only had a very quick test drive, it feels smoother than it did, but still a bit graunchy right at the end of the pedal travel (pedal fully in).
Previously it was worse when warm, so I'll have to wait until my commute on Wednesday to see how much (if any) improvement I really have.
UPDATE: Drove 50 miles or so today, and it feels MUCH better
There's still a tiny bit of roughness in the pedal when fully in, but it's nowhere near the biting point, so not causing me any trouble or p!ssing me off!
