Gti's arnt quick by modern standards mate most low engined cars have around the 130-140 bhp Mark
I would just try a good service including plugs maybe a k&n panel filter cat back exhaust then you should see how it goes.

Yes a holed exhaust will reduce the torque, get it seen to!
The swift comes in at around 125bhp and about 8.6 0-60 The GTI running well should do it in around 8, there wouldn't be much in it but if your car is not running right would make all the difference.

Edit forgot to add why the Exhaust reduces torque Razz An N.A. engine uses the back pressure in the exhaust with out it you will loose some torque, just slapping a bigger exhaust on usually spells disaster unless you have done all you can to get more air into it. See some of the bodied projects to see what that entails I don't think they would have as much of a problem with the swift in the right gear Razz

The Swift shouldn't be faster than a GTi...so yours must be sick.

Thanks fellas. The car was serviced only 4 months ago, Bosch plugs used and K&N panel added. Been running ok until the last few weeks when I started noticing the ticking.....assuming it to be a manifold issue (thought id just leave it due to the hassle of changing it). The car isn't driven in anger very often, does a lot of miles on the A1, steady 70-75. I understand the popping/banging to be air entering the exhaust after lifting off, effectively sucking air in like a venturi effect.

Its definately the torque that is suffering, that response and 'instantaniousness' when pressing the throttle has gone. Once past 4.5k it seems ok-ish.

Power reduction by exhaust hole on a 140bhp 2.0 engine... not massive amounts.

It's typically unburnt fuel hitting a hot exhaust pipe and then igniting, making a pop/burble.

That'll be it!!! I'm too short to press the pedal all the way to the stop, my prosthetic left arm can't feel the gear knob so miss shifts regularly and the ticking, popping and banging was from the factory round the corner!

A Swift Sport is a nippy car and I accept that age will be a factor but the Swifts have naff-all torque. The car has felt better (when I got it) and am pretty convinced this wouldnt have been the case should the car be fully serviceable.

Is anyone qualified enough to state whether a holed exhaust would reduce power and why?

Im not qualified but yes it would reduce power because it affects how efficiently the engine can get rid of the exhaust gas.

depends if the swift had the 5 speed box or the 6 speed to be honest.

but the swift is a new motor. 206 gti is old. bound to slow down abit over time and age. plus you got any extra weight in your car? (sub, pointless crap that just builds up lol).

should be more the same speed if the 206 gti was WELL maintained.

Yesterday eve I patched up the tiny holes with exhaust building paste (at least all the ones I could find) and the ticking noise became notably quieter but not eradicated.

Strangely, today i filled up at my local Jet petrol station. Car is pulling much better and the ticking noise is definitely quieter but still present. You'd hardly believe the previous fill up was at Shell!!!

I can't convince myself that a different brand of fuel would lower the volume of the ticking noise......that concept is plain ridiculous. I do however accept it would improve performance.

If the rest of the car wasn't a nail i'd change the full exhaust!!! Good excuse to go buy a newer GTI!!!
