Hi folks,
My wife has a 2003 206 1.4 Hdi. It's generally a lovely car, and we're only the 2nd owner and it only has 60k on the clock.
However, while driving it a few weeks ago i noticed the steering was very vague and the car seemed to drift around on the road, especially around corners! Shocked
Also, in order to drive straight the steering wheel needs to be offset 1" to 2" to the left.
I've had new front and rear nearside wheel bearings fitted and then a new trackrod end, but it's still doing it! Mad
If i hold the front nearside tyre with both hands (one either side) i can rock the wheel back and forth. As in towards the side of the car then away from the side of the car.
I've been to 2 local garages already, one said bearings so i paid up for them. Another said track rod end, so again i paid for the work. Both have been a waste of money as it's obviously still there!
So if possible i'd like a few impartial ideas on what the problem could be???

As said above, likely the bottom arm from what you are saying. Personally i'd recommend you use a decent one if you replace it, and i'm sure others will too. the cheap ones are so bad its a joke.

id say wishbone mate, well ball join ,,, as DanT said get a Decent one not a cheap one because when they say budget they mean Budget :L last about 1000 miles if that n then bang your problem will return

Same happened to mine a few months back, ball joint had gone, so replaced n/s wishbone and o/s track rod end
Get off the bandwagon, and put down the handbook.

I've got a £30 one and it's lasted 10,000 miles and still going. Depends where it is from.

The wish bone looks to have 2 bushes built in and a seperate ball joint attached to the one end which is then bolted to the hub.
Does that sound right, and if so do i buy just the ball joint or could the play be in the built in bushes??

On mine, from pug you can't get the ball joints seperately, but after market motor factors you can as they simply push out, Just pug after more money I guess

Must be lucky lol. Lots of horror stories regarding cheap ones. Had a couple of bad experiences myself on other cars too. Personally i'd rather not chance it considering how much work that bottom arm/balljoint does!

Couldn't find a "how to" on this forum. Anybody know of one on here and have a link??
Been viewing a few on youtube and most of the ones i've seen just replace the ball joint. However, i intend on keeping the car for a long time so no point in skimping, as there seems to be 2 bushes within the arm itself. Do these tend to fail very often??

ive just had a similar problem.
wheel had movement , definatly a wheel bearing , so i stripped it and got a local garage to press in.
however when i put back together i had vertually the same amount of movement.
i called on a neighbour who works at my local pug and he advised that it was probably a duff bearing or had been pressed in badly and damaged the bearing.
i then had to strip again and purchased another bearing, and took it to a different garaged to be pressed in.
when i fitted it and torqued up the drive bolt (a scaffold pole works wonders) it was solved.No movement.
So, maybe you might want to recheck your wheel bearing?

Quinton Hazel bottom wishbones are cheapish and they are a big UK supplier. There is a HOW TO on the guides section.

It could be wheel bearing, track rod end or bottom wishbone. Once done get it tracked at one of the better four wheel alignment centres. Only ask for it to be tracked as the rear isn't adjustable but the better equipment used for four wheel alignment will be far more accurate than some of the cheap tyre centres use.

Thanks folks.
Looks like i'll be ing a wishbone and ball joint.
I'd like to fit it myself as i'm not to bad on the spanners. However, i'm told i'd need a specific tool. Is that the case?
Not sure what this person meant. Could just be a "splitter", which i already have?
