As I found out the day the car is in need of a good service (due to the tar like oil) I am going to do the timing belt as well as there is no paper work to say its been changed any time soon. How bad are they to do, and will I need to change the water pump?

Dont forget the timing belt tensioner
Get the timing belt kit which is belt & tensioner, works out slightly cheaper.

Mister Auto have 30% off with code MA30.
I have just bought a gates timing belt kit and Valeo water pump for the GTi all for under £100 with the discount.

They are based in France and take 2 days for your parts to arrive.

I have only bought a service kit, It doesnt look too bad to change I was just unsure whether the pump needed done or not. I will make sure I put a new bolt and tensioner in though as don't fancy going down the whole timing belt jumping off cylinder head repair route. Cheers for the advice though I will get stuck in either this week or next

Be as well replacing the water pump and coolant whilst doing the kit, especially if there is no history with the car to suggest otherwise.

It is better to be safe than sorry the car is a 51 plate, done 125000 miles and has one stamp in the service book which dates 2004, best off doing the full wack
