Sometime soon I plan on changing my car, I've got a 1.1 look and had it for nearly 3 years now but fancy something with more power. The insurance is a bit much but petrol prices are only gonna get higher so I might aswell get one to enjoy soon before it becomes to expensive to drive that kind of car.
Basically what I'm asking is, are there any things when looking for a 206 Gti(138) that I should make sure I check or are there certain years to avoid etc.???

make sure the cambelt is done, if they say it has then ask for proof, make sure the engine idles properly, all the usuals tbh, depending on age and if it hasn't been done already it may be worth replacing the coilpack and crank position sensor as these will deteriote with age
Mine is a 1999 model and 7 months after i got it the coilpack needed replacing but then it was trouble free for the next 4 years
go for the later gti's as they had better arial locations and the ph2 bootstrips which imo look much smoother than the bootstrip with the badge

Ok thanks, yh I want to get one made from 2003 onwards so everything is phs 2, mine's a 2002 so I just missed out, and that also had to have the coilpack replaced.

your best bit is if you can afford it is to get the 180, you can get them quite cheap now

I'm 18 mate, 180 will be to much on insurance, if insurance wasn't a problem then I'd have one :/

i think the insurance difference between the 180 and regular GTi is not actually that much tbh and as said the money you can get one for you might aswell as 180 are in the same price range plus 03 onwards are 180 pretty much as to get normal GTi from above 03 is rare

Just had a look and the cheapest price is just over £3000 per year on third party fire and theft which isn't far away from the 138 premium, infact it might even be better!
The next price was about £4500 so I've just got to hope that when I do get round to getting one, the cheapest company will come up with the same or better price.
Thank you for bringing that to my attention, would have been pretty annoyed if I found that out after buying a Gti(138).
Sorry, I'm not looking to buy right now, don't have the funds available and I'm gonna wait until I'm 19 for insurance purposes. Also I want one in Aegean blue

fair enough mate and yeah my premium when i was like 22 no NCB was like £3000 when i first started looking and after checking for a few months it came down to £1300 first car aint bad really sure there is only 1 insurance group difference between 138 and 180 which is silly or might be 2
anyway yeah as you seen might aswell go for 180 good luck with finding one once insurance has come down for you
i want something with turbo next for good gains
