Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40 is a good oil for the money. It meets lots of manufacturer specs and gives a good level of protection. It's not the very best, but not the most expensive either.

We have quite adverse conditions here in the summer, with extreme heat in the middle of the city, and slow as well as v.high speeds/loads.
This leads to people really discussing about engine&gearbox oils on all makes of car etc.
I have experienced a massive difference with that oil like alot of people who mainly use 5W30 or 5W40 full-syn Helix Ultra. It is considered mid to high priced but the effects of using it on economy/reliability more than justifies the cost is the thinking.
The only other oil regarded so highly (at least over here) is Motul 300 range which I have never tried, due to the 'racing' reputation it has.
Regarding ball-wear tests, there might be more factors involved in engine situation because I have tried many others over the years and Shell had percievebly better overall performance.
Hence I'm asking about the whole subject..

unless you got data to back up your statement otherwise i am not sure how you can say one oil is better than the other?
by looking at the formula it will perform no better than normal total 9000 or elf excellium 5w40; which is fairly low grade (cheap) oil.

Even though I have access to a 205 litre barrel of Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5w30 oil I wont put any in my TU3 as it just looks to thin
10w40 semi synthetic Total oil does my TU3 just fine.

Data no, experience yes.
I can categoricaly and with 100% confidence state that I have used Total 9000 (5W40), then put-in and compared with Helix Ultra (5W40) and the difference is astounding. One makes the car go like the clappers and burn less fuel (contradiction I know) whereas the former is just OK. This is taking into account long-term evaluation, adverse situations (v.high intake and ambient temps). I am aware that different oils have different specific viscosities at various temps even if they are quoted the same weight (eg 5W40). I am also taking into account the protection it affords to the engine, and the sound of the smooth pur it makes compared to a rougher noise after a 350 mile trip in the heat.

Helix Ultra 5W30 I have used for a while in the TU3 but I then decided it's too thin for summer use over here.
May well be perfect all year-round in the UK.
Gearbox (MA), on the other hand was a complete-nightmare on my 2001 206 until I put Total BV 75W80 and never looked-back.

Agreed.
But as an engineer I want end-result.
Seriously, I make discussion exactly because I want to know more about it, and data always depends on exact application/conditions, no?
Many times physical outcome is totaly the opposite of what data would initially sugest, and scientists in all areas know this.
The aformentioned gearbox is a good example; it seems not only from me that even compared to all sorts of more expensive and better on paper oils in there (of the right spec), Total BV is the optimum for Peugeot box even though surely it's nothing special.
Sometimes I have found that the most expensive is not necessarily the best for a given application, and that excessive love 'kills'.

People need to remember on here the TU engine & MA gearbox where born before a lot of forum members where even a glint in there daddys eye
TU lump first came out in 1986 fitted to the Citroen AX

you can quantified the end result too
and don't get me wrong, i always use cheap oil

Yes 'quantify' end-result is what I have tried to do with above posts.
Not data on paper and price tag.
You say use cheap oil (what is cheap, which one?) and what are your end-results from your experience?

i use to run torco 5w20 (35 quid 5L) in winter and i got the oil analysis done after oil change. nothing was flag up in the report.
No fuel dilution was detected nor coolant in oil.

OK.
You could try 5W30 Helix Ultra which is considerably more expensive but then we spend so much on the dreaded car in this forum..
It does go quite nicely after a while once it's broken-in though..
