this evening i put ignition on, stereo came on for aprox 3 seconds, then stereo and clock both cut out and didnt work, so tired taking key out and locking/unlocking car then trying again.. nothing. car started fine then drove fine. went to start again after trying to work problem out with checking fuses and no start, turns over but no start, fuel pump working, petrol in car, lights ect work. tried bump starting but nothing, checked all main fuses, (previously head unit and clock would restart rarely on its own and car very rarerly would cut out when slowing down with no revs, but always start fine)... any ideas, i need help
PS - my car is a 2.0l gti 1999 model

sounds like immobiliser. Have you damaged you key recently?
I have been farting around with a new key this afternoon and when it doesnt have a immobiliser chip working in sync you get the car electrics working but no engine start!

Nope! that's if it is the immobiliser may be other things! , a spare key at this point would answer the question!

no necessarily. Disconnect the battery and see what happens.
other bits of advice would be to get diagnostic software on it

It turned out that when I was looking at fuses for the stereo not working I must have put the ignition fuse in the wrong slot and I unplugged all the wires from the stereo and clock, plugged them back in and it's all working again, suppose it was just a blonde moment. Oopss!

How on earth could it possibly have been the immobiliser?
If all electrics cut out (as indicated in the OP) then it's not an immobiliser issue... An immobiliser stops the engine from firing... it wouldn't pull power from the clock/dials/radio etc!
Some people may have a high post count but it doesn't make them knowledgeable in the slightest! (Some things never change on info!)
