My issue is only when starting, and only when cold and maybe rough idle just after it starts. Warm starts are alright and no cutting out.
Would this still point to a crank sensor?
Absolutely. The ECU needs to detect engine is rotating and going at minimum rpm before it will allow fuel and ignition. If it's missing engine pulses then it thinks it hasn't reached that minimum rpm and car isn't allowed to start. It doesn't fire up a fault code because it doesn't detect there's anything wrong with the crank sensor because there isn't anything wrong with its circuit. It's just waiting for the engine rpm to come up and waiting and waiting
When everything is heated on a warm engine and flywheel is expanded then it's picking up the pulses no problem and the engine is allowed to start as normal and runs fine
Sensor position is in line with the flywheel

Ok so got myself a new crank sensor, and removed the old one that was absolutely caked in gunk.
Wit high hopes I started it cold this morning but to no avail- still a hesitant start and the revs only stayed at 1200 for 5 or so seconds before dropping to 1000. When I started it it again very briefly flashed up anti pollution fault but still the engine light is not on. I'm starting to believe it could be coil pack related, or if not pressure regulator.
Any other thoughts?

That's the best thing I've heard in ages.
The flywheel is a solid lump of steel which won't expand in the slightest and it doesn't even get that hot!

No- and I have occassionally taken the battery out to trickle charge it, so the battery is still strong after 2 years.
I am at my wits end with this thing- no codes don't help obviously. One thing I was thinking about is that it has 135k kms on it (75k miles) and I certainly haven't had the injectors cleaned since I've had it for 6 years.
Any views on if getting the injectors cleaned would help a hesitant start?
It very occasionally misfires after it has been started...

hey bezford, thanks for taking the time. I put a bottle of injector cleaner through a few days ago and it really has not made a difference, so I can safely stop thinking about that.
One other thing I was thinking about is the fuel pressure. I said before that I think the regulator is in the actual fuel pump, unlike a sperate one for diesels. The only problem with this car is a cold start, and VERY occasionally it flashes up (by half a second) APF and then dissappears.
Would I be right in thinking that it flashes APF (anti poll.) due to the fuel pressure being low, and then once it cranks and starts the pressure returns to normal? The EML has NEVER flashed nor remained on...
