I tried it a couple of months ago on a 1.1 saxo - still tapped like a bag of nails

Maybe they were neglected for too many miles.
But the point is not to make it quieter. (That's what I thought too at first)
It's to get better, smoother running overall of the engine and making it last longer, with more power and less fuel consumption. There is no-way you can do this properly just in one stage.
You have to keep at it 3-4 times over a period of time so the valve-seats re-form and the whole setup settles-down.
Also, unless you reset the adaptation every time, the ECU can't take the new setting into account. This can lead to big apparent problems straight-away with un-even idle, hesitation etc.

It's likely - to be fair I never drove it afterwards just ended up scrapping it did my head in long story short
Don't plan on owning a car with adjustable tappets again though

Well I checked my tappets today, its done nearly 90k miles & there spot on NO ADJUSTMENT REQUIRED 
Inside of the rocker cover & the deflector plate could do with a visit to the degreasing tank but thats a job for another day, ill also save the new gasket till then

How long did you leave the engine to cool?

Yeah, they all measured up fine with the feeler blades so left them alone.
Ill take the rocker cover of & clean it & the deflector plate in the degreasing tank at work then refit it with the new gasket in a couple of weeks.

You can also turn the engine over with the spark plugs removed by just operating the powersteering pump pulley, it all turns over easy enough.
No need to go near the crank pulley.
