Soo. Thought I would share my bad luck with people and hopefully if anyone else is experiencing similar issues they will know what to do.

Car: 206 1.4 Glx 51plate Milage 61000

OK so 3 weekends ago....

I brought a timing belt kit as it was hightime she needed doing. Before it got too cold I thought I best service her and had some leftover oil from last years (4l GTX from asda for 10quid so brought 2)

Did a 106 timing belt in the morning so the 206 was a doddle. (The timing belt was loose! So definitely needed swapping!!!)

So by the end of the day had 2 pugs new timing belt (and water pump and tensioner OFC!) and a happy me.

That week. Water rushing noise from heater matrix pipes!!!!
Bleed system. Noise goes away for 2 miles then is back!

This only means one thing! you have a leak or you have HeadGasketFailure. The coolant changes from clear pink to dirty orange foam. - Shes gone. So the following weekend I get the head off and the gasket is totally wrecked. Head looked ok but as it was off I drove it 30 miles to get is skimmed. - 90quid for a skim and test. Meh

So then top engine goes back together. New HG new head bolts, full oil change again new filter ... (the week old oil was knackered) and do engine coolant flush with the hose and fill the coolant.

Issue 1 with first start,

I had pored oil into the CAT, oops - tonnns of white smoke for about a minute.

Issue 2: One of the injectors was leaking fuel out of the side. (Must have been broken while getting it out of the head) - quick trip to breakers 40quid later for 4 injectors (have some spares now) thats fixed.

Issue 3: The brass bleed screw on the left hand side water/oil manifold cracks open and dribbles pink coolant out and stops system pressurise.

Use stud remover (lukly its hollow and the remover got it straight out)

Replace with siliconed screw.

Bleed system - all ok. Temp nominal. Take for drive. She is happy.

Cost of above:

Timing belt kit, water pump and first service items - 120quid

Head gasket failure

Gasket set and headbolts 60quid
Service 2 parts - 30quid - had some oil left over)
New dipstick as it broke 7quid

Not tooo bad for a years motoring.


THEN this week.

Fast knocking noise when in overrun....

Diff has blown in the gearbox

New gearbox time: 350quid for a recon box

While its out. 2 New drive shafts - from eurocarparts 90quid for drive
new drop links 15quid
Poly bush for the broken engine mount rear bush.

So in 3 weeks ive done almost a grand down the 206.

Hope nobody else has this sort of luck and once the new box is in that should be it for the car.


So if you hear water rushing noise - your HG is failing

Knocking noise when in overrun - gearbox is gone

And dont do a timing belt before checking head gasket - should not cost much . garrage uses mot emmisions tester to sniff the coolant.

Goodluck all and I will put up some advice if anyone wants on how to go about doing the above.

I've yet to break a MA or BE gearbox in 15+ years of driving / owning many different PSA products & im known to drive cars hard, WTF are you lot doing to break them Shocked

My car was a low milage city miles only from london so I guess it must have never seen open road and just been city start stopped allot. Within 6 months of getting it on 50k it needed a new clutch - the release bearing exploded!

I drive it only motorways about 50 miles a day and thats it. I take the wifes new clio at weekends.

Damn cars are endless money pits! I would even like to imagine how much it would have cost iv I had to pay someone to do it. Probbaly more than its worth

I feel for you! My engine conversion was rushed (my fault; got too excited and I missed not having a car for a long while)

When i got the car back the gear change was awfully stiff and reverse lights were not connected so I payed out to have this fixed. The stiff gear change I lived with for a while before it got so bad that it was so difficult to even get 1st. Too the car to krisb who managed to ease the gear changes but he could not recover 2nd gear as the selector rod in the actual gearbox was bent(from me trying to select it by forcing it into gear)
Upon inspection kris found the bleed screw on the master cyclinder was loose and I was drawing in air (this accounted for hard gear changes) and he also discovered a leak, one of the powersteering hoses was touching the exhaust so the pipe melted and was turning power steering fluid into vapour (I was breathing the vapour in! And also it is flammable at 180 degrees)

So I almost died of either a explosion or smoke inhalation.

Car is now getting its gearbox changed its an engine out job so I have no car on the drive Sad

So the whole ordeal has been nothing but trouble for you by the sounds?

Actually I just remembered that I had to change the turbo twice in 1 month back in 2008-9, but that was covered under waranty so I didnt pay a penny

I'd happily pay a grand to fix something over this.

This 206 IS going on a trackday despite it's every effort to stay at home in the garage!

What was it for? Speeding?

My mate got done for that and got 8 month ban and some sort of fine, and now has to do 5 weekends in a row of driving aware course

I think anyone who knows my old gti will probably know I've had the same level of problems, if not worse.

All mine started in April '12 when I had an engine fault but no code saying what it was, garage had it 2 months (working on it when they had time) before they realised the ecu and wiring loom was buggered, this was after they had replaced the icv, tps and coilpack.

Get the car back and everything seems fine for a week then the crankshaft sensor calls it a day, this was replaced only for a few weeks down the line i find the car doesn't start at all, mot is due same day so it's towed to the garage for the mot and new battery fitted, week later car fails to start, take it back to garage who look at it and see there is a fault with the ecu, ecu goes off to be repaired and 2 days later get told car is fixed, drive home and notice eml is on, leave it for few days, go to use it and nothing, tow the car down to the garage and after a few days get told again it's the ecu, this time it comes back fixed but when it needed petrol the inside of the car stank of it.
