Has anyone had problems with valve clearances on a 2.0L diesel after 125000 miles. Just wondered if poor mixture could be a reason for poor cold (frosty!) starting.

Now that the mornings are very cold my glow plugs come on when starting.
Are yours coming on?

I fitted new ones but the old ones were working ok. I check them after removal.

check battery.
mine won't start last week (i rarely use the car btw), it keep crank over (over mins) but never fire.
took the battery off, hook it up to the charger, next day the car just start easily.

Had a new battery last year. Had the same problem last year so got a new Varta battery (but no different) and struggled over the winter but I am anticipating getting a bit fed up particularly if it is colder than last winter.

well i don't think you can alter the valve clearances as it got hydraulic lifters which are self adjusted.

Are you waiting for the pre-heater light to extinguish before cranking the engine?
I am not an expert on the 206 diesel but most diesels have a glow plug heater light. If the weather is cold you usually turn the ignition on and then wait for the glow plug light to extinguish. if you spin it over without doing that the car is sucking air that is so cold it is difficult to ignite the air / fuel mix.
Is the 206 the same as most other diesels in this respect?

Ive only ever seen my preheat light come on once...during the very cold spell year or so go. Never has a probably starting even when its that cold....minus wot ever it was. Is not seeing the light a good or bad thing???

Also try pumping the fuel primer before you start it. If it starts OK after pumping then there will be air in the fuel line somewhere.

Glow plug lights come on when coolant temperature drops below 20 degrees celcius, (haynes manuel) it sugests to me pre post relay unit, behind battery, (attached to casing) could be the fault, had trouble with mine 2 years ago, been fine since.
Worth checking anyway.

Thanks again for the info.
Although the tappets are hydraulic I assume it has shims that are not correct after 125000 miles b ut since no one seems to have that trouble perhaps I should look elseware.
The glow plug light does come on and I wait for it to go off, sometimes get it to come on and go off 2 or 3 times. Will check the per/post relay.

Our 206 HDI has done 117k miles and that's running sweet and I've done 297k miles in my 306 HDI.
The only problem I've had with starting on my 306 HDI was a dodgy injector. On cold winter mornings it would run lumpy but once warm would run ok. That was after 250k miles and after changing the set of injectors one fuel pipe was slightly leaking so caused it to not start on the first attempt sometimes. After sorting the leak it's been fine since.
It might be worth seeing what the fuel rail pressure is when cranking. I think if its less then 300bar it'll be a pressure issue.
