When I press on the brakes after getting into the car in the morning they make a scraping sound. This happens the first few times I apply the brakes, but after that, nothing. Then if I get into the car later on that day, same thing again. Noisy brakes at the start but it goes away.
My mate has looked at the brakes, taken the disc and pads off, cleaned them and reassembled but still they make noise. What could be causing this, and why does it stop after a few minutes, but then return later?

There fine, it's just there wet cause it's cold out there this time of year, my 307 does it more or less every morning pulling out of my drive, once i get round the junction to get out of the block there fine.
actually rereading that you said scraping, did you check the drums?

Yes, he checked the drums too, it is a scraping sound that they are making, they did this before and I did need new brake pads, and they were replaced and everything was quiet again. But the pads have been checked and all are fine so not sure where this noise is coming from and why it only happens when starting a journey.
Funny you mention drums, I'm getting one of the back ones replaced tonight as my mate said the tread was going as the wheel had been taken off quite a few times for fixing stuff and didn't want the wheel to come off on me. I'll mention it to him tonight but he did say he'd checked all parts of the wheel and brakes and couldn't see a problem.

But the pads were taken off and cleaned last week, no dirt or rust on them and it still made the noise straight after when driving again. Or could the dirt or rust be somewhere I can't get to and I just have to put up with it?
It's unnerving when driving thinking there's something wrong with the brakes, not helped by family members who borrow my car and always mention the noise brakes to me!

To be sure I'd strip the rear brakes down and see how much material is left on the shoes.
I had a car once that would grind on first application then be quiet after that. One of the rear shoes had worn unevenly and was worn out completely at one end.

When it's squeeling, lift gently the handbrake without pressing the handbrake pedal.
If no squeal, then it's the front, if squeal then it's the rear.
Clean thoroughly, adjust the auto-adjuster (!) and a dab of ceramic greece will help on the back of the pads.
I use Pagid ceramic gel tube and it solved my problems that were driving me nuts esp. in the summer with blistering heat.

Scraping or grinding?
Mine does it first thing, after one or two presses and the heat has got into the brakes, they're fine.
I think it's just a bit of rust that grows on the drum and disk when the car is parked. It only takes a couple of hours for the rust to start forming, you just need to look at your discs after you have washed the car and left it on the driveway.
I know that there is plenty of meat on my pads and shoes, bit of a lip on the disc and drum, but nothing major. I've just had the auto adjusters replaced, but you know if these have stopped working because your car will creep while the handbrake is on and you are stopped on a slight incline.
It's probably just one of those annoying things that Peugeot owners have to live with. It's not like there's many problems we have to endure with them.

My discs start spotting with rust after sat for just 2 days and if i set off and hear this scraping of the brakes i just dab the foot pedal quickly and that seems to do the trick....now i know that on cars ive had in the past that having to perform this little dab manouvere that they have needed the pads/discs replacing and its a dead obdvious sign there on there last legs but while mine dont look new they certainly look to have a few thou miles in them yet..
when i do replace my brakes i will myself ,and advise others to also, give the calipers and any relative shims/slider channels a really good clean and add copper grease whereever needed,and make sure the pistons in the calipers are in good working order along with there rubbers and faces taking a little time to do the job right will prolong the life span of the brakes and all parts too for that matter.

A grinding / scraping noise from the rear drums is perfectly normal for a 206 on the first couple of brake applications.
Its just the way they are

I've had the drum replaced and the noise has reduced significantly. There's a faint noise the first few times I brake but after that, nothing so it appears there may have been a problem with the old drum that was causing it. All fine now, cheers!
