Hi everybody,
I'm looking at buying my first car (I'm 17) and would love a 206. I can only afford to run a 1.4 (petrol) max. What I'm confused about is which engine to get - an 8v or a 16v. Is the 16v a better engine? Reliability?

Also, what else should I look out for? - my brothers will be going to buy it for me. Very Happy

Thanks and see you all soon!

Alice

Go for the bulletproof 8 valve lump & avoid anything with an automatic gearbox.

The 1.1 might be slightly cheaper on insurance, try & get a 206 with ABS fitted.

The 1.1 isn't that much slower then a 1.4 around town, it just lacks the top end of the 1.4 but it can still do 70mph easily enough.

Thanks MrBSI,
My insurance quote was not much different between the 1.1 and the 1.4 £30 I think. My brother says the 16v has a little extra power over the 8v and has 'VVT' (whatever that is!!). Is the 16v less reliable then?

Yes Laughing

The 8 valve engine is basically bulletproof ( apart from head gasket ) as its been around since the stone age

The 8 valve 1.4 has 75 bhp & the 16 valve version has 90 bhp.

Your 17, it's your first car, you don't need 90 bhp as 75 is more then enough to get you in to trouble if you abuse it Wink

It will be less total loss claims ( at the moment ) for younger people on the 16 valve version.

What he saves there can be put towards the repair bills on the 16v Razz

Hi Alice,

I just got a 2002 1.4 LX for my daughter with 98000 on the clock and it goes realy well. Got it insured 3rd party in my name but with her as main driver and it was just over £400 so not bad and she is only 18.

By the way apparantly a 5 door is cheaper to insure than a 3 door, not sure if that's true, anyone else heard that?

I've got a 1.4 206 and the headgasket went as I had the famous oil leak, wasn't that expensive to fix and I had the Cambelt done at the same time. Apparently the 16v cost a lot more to fix if the gasket goes so bare that in mind pal!
