i used to use cooking oil of the shelf in tesco's, back when diesel was £1.30 a litre and oil was 75p a litre, use to buy 20 at a time, i had somes looks mind, i mixed it 50/50 and ran fine, on cold mornings it hard to start mind,

my mate used bio for 18 months never had a problem in his v reg 206 1.9 diesel

i recomend having heater fitted, it can blow the seals in the pump, you can get heaters that run off your rad pipes and you can get ones that are electric(for start up)

There seems to be a bit of confusion here between 'biofuel' and 'biodiesel' . Biofuel is any oil which other than filtering hasn't been processed. Biodiesel is oil which has undergone a 'transesterification' process which splits the oil into glycerol (waste) and biodiesel. A Google search will give details. I have used nothing but biodiesel in the 1.9 engine without any problems for the last 72000 miles (5 years). Initially starting with 50/50 and changing the filter at 1000 miles and again at 3000 (the biodiesel cleans out the crap from the tank and lines left by pump diesel NOT the other way around). I use an inline filter as well but have only changed it once out of habit rather than necessity. There is NO noticeable difference in performance and my costs to make my own are approximately 15 pence per litre (but I do have a source of free waste oil, make sure you have a source/ sources before embarking!). A great site for beginners is 'Journeytoforever'. As it's saved me over £12000 I can only say "Go for it"

As an addition to the above I had the seals in the pump 'uprated' to Viton by 'DieselBob' (another good site. There is a section in the main site titled 'Vegetable Bob' which lists most of the fuel pumps and their suitability (or otherwise) for use with biodiesel and straight vegetable oil. I had the seals changed to 'Viton' which is resistant to bio at the same time as I had my cambelt changed so the difference in cost wasn't a lot. But DO make sure your pump is a Bosch NOT Lucas/CAV which is a definite NO NO.
