I noticed this morning in the dark that with my lights on they weren't particulary bright so Ive just checked them and the only light that shows is the side light even if i choose the dipped/full beam option. The 2 headlights that wont light are the middle 2.

Sorry to jump on here but my middle morette on the passenger side doesn't work either tried the bulb and that's fine, its more then likely dodgy wires mate

Dodgy wires where ?

Wouldn't be a fuse would it or do all the lights work off the same 1 ?

Just checked and the full beam lamp works, its just the dipped that doesn't.

Probably just a fuse.
Take a look at the fuse diagram and then check the fuses.

Checked the fuses and they seem fine.

Well ive got the nearside bulb out and id say its blown (some black on inside of the bulb), there's a small piece of filament thats loose. Not sure if the drivers side is the same but id say it is.

Do your main beam flash when you pull the stalk towards you? If the flash works, I'd be looking at the switch behind the steering wheel. Are we talking about crystals and a multiplexed car?

Well the full beam option works.

What switch is this behind the steering wheel ?

I take it crystals is refering to the bulb from the question on the lamp thread, its orignal lamps so not sure what they are.

I believe its multiplexed which rings a bell from when I looked on here about radios.

If it's multiplexed they will be H7 crystals. If it's October 2001> then i'ts a multiplexed.
The comm2000 unit behind the steering wheel is the unit that controls the lights, indicators and wipers.
They are prone to having issues. Usually it's the lights turning on when you indicate.

I'm getting confused with your original post. You only have side lights on, even when you turn the dipped beam on. When you turn the main beam on, main beam lights up, but the dipped beam still doesn't come on.

Both the N/S and O/S operate on a different fuse, engine bay fusebox 9 and 10, and are earthed in separate locations
If the fuses are OK (check with multimeter), and the bulbs are OK (easy check is to swap them into the main beam holders) then it must be a common location. The only 2 items both sides share is the switch and the BSI.

Checked the fuses for 9 and 10 and they were fine, that what led me to think the lamps were at fault and are since 1 has blown, haven't checked the other as it looks like its more fiddly to get at.

Its 2004 so its multiplexed.

When changing the driver's side, don't forget you can remove the top of the washer fluid nozzle thing.Gives you a bit more room to move.

Yes seen that mentioned on a blog I read earlier.

Are the Osram nightbreakers a decent replacement.

Yup. I use Phillips xtremes in the main beams, but there's not a great deal of difference
