Right, Been given a set of Mintex front discs and pads for my 2000 D-turbo as a mate sold his 53 plate before changing them.
THE PROBLEM: Discs sit further back on the hub, the pad carrier doesnt fit far enough back so cant tighten it up with out pushing disc forward. Not good.
POSSIBLE RESOLVE: Sell them and get right ones, Or get 53 MY calipers and pad carriers as mine have done 155 thou miles so bit tired.
Now is it just a case of getting the right carriers for mine and use the old calipers or do I need to get the right calipers as well as mine wont fit the newer carriers and discs????
Also, is it worth getting GTI Calipers to improve the braking affect or is there no point of doing this kind of upgrade as im not achieving anything really ?
I expect just get new carriers from a 53 my will do it but is it that simple??

You already have GTI calipers
Just buy the right stuff in the first place.
There are three types of pads for the 2.0 HDi, and two types of discs.

One of the best brake upgrades if you are suffering brake fade is sometimes new fluid. If your fluid is more than 5 years old (3 years recommended) then new fluid can be an absolute revelation.
My priority order for brake improvements is always:-
1) service the existing system ensuring everything is free to move as it should.
2) replacement fluid.
3) performance brake pads but don't go to silly as some "performance" pads need lots of heat before they work.
4) full system upgrade including disk and pad replacement.

RIght so no ppoint in getting gti ones ok. I go them as payment for a favour I did so worth trying to sort them. The discs on the car are shallower than the new ones and the newies are thicker too. Pads...right another issue maybe...fab! The new ones look same as old pads.

Pads are screws, clips or springs
Discs are 22mm or 20.4mm

My brakes are awful so hoped this would be an easy sort out. Fluid will be changed for sure.
I had a hammer to the old pads to get them out of the carriers as they were solid! Very glazed too. I must do more servicing, yes I heard ya. Im on the motorway all the time and working loads, so doesnt get much tlc. Hence the massive service and cambelt etc im doing now while I can.

Pads: D clip style retainers on old
Discs: Old, No idea too rotten! I think 20mm new ones are 22

If you took a hammer to get the pads out and the pads were glazed then just new pads moving freely will be a massive improvement. Add new fluid bled to all 4 corners and I suspect that you won't feel the urge to upgrade the full system.
Standard new disks are actually cheap and will significantly reduce the bedding in time as they are perfectly flat where you old ones will be ridged and tapered.

Oh yes, I think ill feel the diff for sure. One disc distorted so new discs needed. Wish he had the receipt for kit we could swap it.
Any body want a Mintex kit??????

If you have diagnosed the distorted disk because of pumping through the pedal and brake judder that is probably not a distorted disk but an "imprinted" disk caused by overheating that is caused by your seized pads. There is an easy but slightly risky fix so I wouldn't post it on an open forum. Anyway with what your disks have been subject to and their age and new ones aren't expensive so just replace them. If you want to know the fix PM me.
When fitting your new discs make sure the hubs are spotlessly clean as any rust flake on the mounting surface will cause disk run out you will have judder again and your new disks will need replacement.

Im getting steering wheel twitch at speed and a touch under braking that disappears when braking heavy. I planned to change the discs on the next set of pads anyway so here we are.
Just a pitty this Mintex set were wrong. Ill have to sell them and get a the correct kit I recon.

My diagnosis.
You have seized pads as you have stated but one side is worse than the other.
When you brake gently on the side that is less seized the brakes are applied, but on the side that is most seized the brake doesn't come on. The brake slows one wheel more than the other and the car pulls to one-side.
When you brake hard the extra pedal pressure overcomes the resistance on the side that is most seized so both brakes are applied evenly and the car stops straight.
The twitch at speed is possibly the fact that your seized brakes are dragging so high speed heats the pads and they start to bind on.
Servicing the brakes will not only improve your braking but as the brakes won't then be dragging you might get another 2 - 3 mpg.

That was a good read....once I got my head around it lol.
Makes sence. I think I do have that spotting problem with mine to be onnist, but they are old and getting thin so ill affect the correct procedure on the new set.
I was thinking of getting a disc lathe and going out to do it as a business once...but would people pay for it or just get new discs?? Racers might!
