Just took the girlfriends car for mot and got a fail for emissions
Here's the report that i think is in range but on the borderline .
Fast idle test limits actual value
CO <=0.3% 0.01% =pass
HC <=200 ppm 8ppm =pass
Lambda 0.97-1.03 1.03 = fail
Second fast idle test
CO <=0.3% 0.00%= pass
HC <=200 ppm 0 ppm = pass
Lambda 0.97-1.03 1.03 = fail
Natural idle test
CO <=0.5% 0.09% = pass
Any idea why it failed emissions? ,if it's the Lambda sensor is there 1 or 2 on a 1.4 8v 2002? If so which needs changing ?

Seems harsh, but if its upto 1.03 & not upto & including 1.03, then yes it's a fail. Go back & ask the garage for clarification?
When you take it for a retest make sure you give the car a good thrashing first.

As above. Super unleaded in tank and give it a good run. Make sure it's been serviced as well. A dirty air filter can give higher readings.

Depends if that 1.03 is actually 1.029 or 1.031. Both round to 1.03, but one is OK, the other is over the limit.

Seems to be a common thing for these cars to fail there mot on, mine failed on the same thing.

No all fine, got it through on another mot station that were not so strict. I had fitted a new exhaust but i have also put a new cat and lambda sensor on now.

According to test centre it's ok to go upto 1.03 during emission test but if it goes above this figure during this test,and then falls back to 1.03 then it will fail,as its done over different rpm for a certain amount of seconds. I'm a bit dubious of this tho,and was told cat had gone causing this and has since passed now,but emission test still read 1.03after cat fitted so wether he was having me in I don't know perhaps a mot tester on here can let us know.?

Before any work was done on the car, you should have contacted VOSA and asked for them to arrange an inspection. They would have sent you to another test station to have the MOT done again or sent a VOSA technician to a test station to inspect the area it failed on.
I think you have to pay for the second test, but if it was found that the car should have passed, you'd be entitled to a refund on the first test and VOSA would look closely at the test centre involved.
You could still contact VOSA with your concerns. They normally send a borderline car through the centre to make sure the testers are doing their jobs properly. Cow boy testers either turn a blind eye to minor failure items or they fail a vehicle unnecessarily and try and make more money from doing a repair that wasn't needed. VOSA want to stamp out both these types and can only do it with the help of the public.

He told me it should of been another retest cost but waved it,but think really as he charged the same to put on diagnostic machine as an mot,in reality his charged me for the mot anyway.

The thing you have to realise is the emissions is done through a computer, and not the MOT tester, so MOT tester cant be blamed for this,it either passes or fails as per emission data

If he charged you £54 for a diagnostic, I'd take it to Peugeot next time! That's far to expensive for a small garage to charge.
