In the photo it is difficult to see but are the breaks, or the most recent part of it thinner than the metal on adjacent teeth.
Were there any symptoms leading up to the failure?
Is there wear on adjacent teeth and is that wear only on a section of the crown wheel as that could be worn / seized or partially seized bearing.
I have seen similar; boy racer doing a tyre spin pull away. Just as the car started to move off it dropped into quite a big pot hole. The resultant jolt sheared the teeth. The boy racer was my brother in a Vauxhall Viva.

Strange, I know the crown had a tenancy to drop out but not heard of that one. Wheel spinning while the wheel is turned generally shags the planet gears but not sure if it could cause damage to the crown.
Excessive play in the bearings could stress it. Lack of lubrication could play a part. Not sure how else it could be overloaded.

Clasic down-shift mashup by the looks of it.
