Regards miles on longer trips that will depend on your driving style and how patient you can be. If you drive on the motorway at about 80mph then you will be around 30mpg but that still depends on how you use the throttle, take advantage of hills or brake hard.
You need to remember that the 1.4 8V is an engine design that is probably 20 years old and maybe more and, I suspect, the ecu programme won't have been reviewed or updated for almost as long.
