Thank you to all... I did a search for the BSI and it was quite likely, however, as luck would have it, the £4.99 jump leads appeared to have saved the day. Did a resistance check and the cooper must have burnt out. Put the battery back on after an hours charge and she burst back into life.
A very close shave and a lesson learnt. But if nothing else - I think there is a lot to be said for cheap jump leads here! They burn out before the charge ruins your car
Thank you to everyone for your help. You know a good owners club when you get this much response in such a short space of time.

206s ECUs are so sensitive to voltage spikes, shorts etc.. you are so lucky that the BSI didnt go! You cant even change a bulb with the battery connected cause it could kill it.. lucky man

Total b******s, its perfectly safe to change any of the bulbs fitted on a 206 with the battery still connected.
