My 2003 peugeot 206 shows a high temperature reading on the temperature guage , but the heater is only blowing cold air , could i ask the most probable reason for this , is it a new thermostat needed , is old one stuck open/closed , does the system need bleeding , or possibly all of the above ???

Heater blowing cold air indicates a coolant flow problem so either air lock or blockage. As you are getting high temp readings too then it could well be an airlock in the system.

Hold the inlet and outlet pipes where they go through the bulkhead to the heater, if they are cold with engine warmed up then there's no flow of coolant through the heater circuit

If thermostat is stuck open you'll tend to see low engine temps and very weak heater output

If you've lost coolant recently then you have a problem and simply topping up has created an airlock

the car has had some problems recently , temp guage going upand down rapidly and the "stop" sign illuminating on the dash , I pulled over for a while then alll was fine when i set off again
the car just past its mot and the garage stated a 02 sensor would need replacing as the emmisions were poor
2 days ago the car again got very high temp , the engine light illuminated on the dash and all power from engine just about dissapeared but i was able to drive about a mile home , byy then the engine was absolutly red hot
i bought a cheap obd reader that advised two faults , 1) code p0420 o2 sensor on bank 1. 2) p0115 engine coolant temperature circuit sensor 1 .

i have fitted a new 02 sensor and await the delivery to dealer of the coolant sensor.
i have noted that the water had completely gone from the expansion tank and it took approx 2 and a half pint to fill to minimum level

i have changed the oil and filter due to the excessive heat

i am now thinking of also getting a new thermostat and replace it anyway as they are quite cheap and it hasnt had a new once since i bought the car new

Losing so much coolant without a visible external leak and driving with a red hot engine is bad. You may be looking at head gasket gone

sorry about lack of details in 1st post but your reply elicited more details

as above i mentioned i have changed the oil , am i right in thinking that if the head had gone would i not find some water in /on the oil (there was none).neither could i see any on the floor , in the engine bay or any staining i may expect to see if it had been pumping out anywhere. i am rather hoping it is down to lack of maintanance by my daughter who uses the car daily

It's impossible to guess on head gasket failure, you may have got away with it, often there's a cross over of oil/coolant and mayo in the coolant tank or rocker cover on gasket failure but not always. A red hot engine is obviously bad for so many reasons and can require other jobs being done, often the thermostat seizes, the coolant needs a total flush and it can partially block coolant passages as well as a risk of seizing engine moving parts

The concern is that the coolant went somewhere and if it's not external or in the cabin then it's internal

Your daughter sounds the same as mine and needs constant reminders to check coolant level Very Happy

When a head gasket goes it is not always water getting into oil. Sometimes the water exits via the cylinders to the exhaust.
Keep a very close eye on the water level or get a "sniff" test done at your local garage. That is a check to see if exhaust gases have got into the coolant. If they have that is head gasket failure.
