My partrners 1.4 hdi seems to be making that dissel tapping noise much louder then when she brought it. Its seems to be coming from drivers side top of engine. I have flushed engine and put fresh oil in, but it still sounds loud, anyone got a 1.4 hdi and can tell me if its normal. Thanks

Mine sounds like this plus a little aux belt whine when cold.
There's 3 things that can make the sound, most obvious and easy to check is bottom pulley. This has a distinct metallic clank. Then here's a leaking injector, that makes a chuffing sound. And then clogged tappets, when you rev the engine and the oil pressure (or temperature) gets high enough the tapping will stop. This is easy to notice when gaining speed from standstill with cold engine.

Tappets are really obvious. Mine stops about 3000 rpm as the pressure builds and the difference in sound is really noticable. If it is this then you can try the tappetcleaner additive (made mine sound better but not completely gone). I was goingto change mine out untill I saw the price of new ones as the car only needs to run another year then its going.

Actually the tappets are really cheap. I got mine from here, same as the original PSA part.

When you say tappets, I think you mean the hydrolic lifters?
Mine make a noise until 3k, then disappear.
Think i'll do mine soon, only £50 for 8.
Does anyone know if the cam belt and cam need to be removed?
