i have a 2002 1.6 16v xsi, i wanted to know whether i could swap JUST the engine, take the 1.6 out and drop the 2.0 gti in, keeping all mounts and what else the same, what else would i need to swap to make it run smoothly and work? ecu etc, throttle body etc...

well i would like more power, but just wondering would i have to buy everything off a gti to make it work or could i use some of the stuff off my 1.6?

Why not just tune the 1.6 with aftermarket performance parts?

Too much needs changing to make it worthwhile. Unless you have 2 crap cars and have all the ingredients to make a good one.

you can get a gti for pennys now, would be easyer just to by one. off the top of my head the 1.6 is a TU engine and the gti is a EW so your need to change mounts, ecu, loom, gearbox....

True, the 1.6 does have a lot of potential though due to sharing the sane platform as the 106 GTi/Saxo VTs.

Adam I would say, in just my opinion that going down the road of cams and heavy engine mods would be more expensive that buying a Gti that just needs a little TLC. It's going to cost when you come engine internals.

How much extra would you get from an ECU remap, induction, and exhaust? The induction and exhaust can cost buttons on Ebay, a reamp about £200 I would guess. I'd guess at £300 for the lot if you're lucky. It depends how far you want to go. It's your car and your choice but if it was me wanting GTi power I would either buy a GTi or get a 2.0HDi and have it mapped to 155bhp with an intercooler.

But then if I could get 140bhp out of my 1.4 just to p**s people off I would Smile

i have a 1.6 16v XSI 53plate... and i mean needing not sound silly... its fast enough.. yes okay a GTI is a GTI.. but for the price of it, i can get a set of newman ph3 cams £400 a re-map £200 and an induction kit anyhting up to £100... and i can have probably 150+BHP.. and waste a GTI in a race.... just mod it, the XSI is an awesome car... get a C2 VTS inlet manifold, get the cylinder head from a C2 VTS, and a 4-2-1 manifol... and will be up there with a 180 if you get another re-map after all the mods, depends on your pockets and far you wanna take it... i am on a low budget of earning £1000 a month maybe more depends how hard i work Razz

lol. but i personally would just get a new set of newman ph3 cams, an new exhaust and an inlet manifold from aC2 VTS and get it mapped... SORTED!!

another thing people failed to mention is the insurance increase after an engine swap, i think it would be far cheaper in the long run to just buy a GTi and swap any bits you want to keep from the XSi
