my 206 gti engine light has come on,ive had the fault read and its the lambda senser so just thought id try changing it myself,so soaked it in freeing oil and as I did so I noticed that I have 2 of them one near the cat and one on the downpipe.
is this normal? will I have to replace both ? or is one something else?

A simple exhaust leak can trigger a lambda sensor fault code
You have checked the exhaust system is ok first?

you need to know which one is the faulty one when you got the fault code read,no need to change both, but usually the upstream one is the highly to get faulty, but double check to be sure.

My 206 failed its first MOT on a failed downstream sensor...so it could be either at fault. Did the fault code not specify which sensor it was?

Fault code should have identified which one.
The comment about exhaust leak is a good one. You need to have a very good look at the joints and welds as a hole not much bigger than a pin can give you lambda readings that will cause MOT failure or a fault code light on and a hole that small can't be heard as an exhaust blow.
