Hi

I have a 206 1.4lx 2002. I have a continuing problem with the temperature gauge needle going right down to zero and then shooting up to the red even though the car isn't hot. The engine diagnostic light stays on too. It has now got to the stage where it automatically goes to red and the stop light flashes when the car is started from cold. It has been in the garage about 5 times now and it's starting to cost a fortune! the ECU, Head Gasket, Sensor etc have all been replaced but i still have the problem. It is getting worse in that the gauge goes to red and stays there with the fan kicking in each time. Help! Any ideas as to what to try next?

Finding a garage / mechanic that actually knows what there doing would be a good start.

I would refuse to pay anymore. You took it in for a fault, the failed to fix it but charged you for their guess work and replaced what were probably perfectly good parts. Does the mechanic wear a mask and stripy shirt?

Ask them what fault code came up on their diagnostic machine, post the code on here and you could get the answer to what is causing the fault.

Thanks - not knowing much about cars you tend to trust a 'qualified' person? More fool me. The last thing they said was that it would probably have to do on diagnostic machine at a Peugeot garage as their machine is more thorough. Is this right? Sounds like it could cost a bit - Anyone know how much?

They should have done that in the first place. Guessing is only a waste of cash ...

See if you can find a Peugeot or Citroen specialist in you area or find someone with PP2000 to run a proper diagnostic.

Mr BSI can be a bit abrupt, but he's right ..

Take a look on this PP2000 map,you might find a member from here who can help you to have a good fault read with his PP2000

Sounds to me that is is either:-

a) Electrical short causing the sensor to send a false reading to the ECU.
b) Intermittent circulation problem.
c) Air in the system (a sensor in air rather than water will show the engine being cold when it is actually hot.)

If it is an electrical short on the sensor wiring the ECU and reading with PP2000 will also give you an inaccurate guide to what is wrong.

Please repeat what the gauge is now doing. Is it;-

a) starting to warm up normally then dropping to zero before shooting into the red.
b) going straight from zero to the red and if so how quickly after starting the car.
c) reacting normally for a while then going straight into the red.
d) something else.
