Right I've been putting up with this problem for a while but now it's got a lot worse. It doesn't like cold starts. When I pull away it really struggles and when I push the accelerator slightly the revs drop. Now it's banging and sounds like a misfire. When the cars warm it runs normally with no issues.

Any ideas? I thought coil pack maybe

I believe that the GTI like most has two temp sensors. One is for the gauge and one is for temp to ECU to ensure correct fuelling. If the sensor is defective it might be sending a signal to the ECU saying the engine is already hot so for a cold engine it would under fuel the car and run lean when cold so it could be that sensor.

Personally though I am with you and would suspect coil pack. Can you swap with a mate?

personally i would be looking at the temp sensor first before spending out on a new coil pack.
both of my 180's used to run rough from cold but changed the sensors and it has made a big diffrence to them.

This is absolutely correct. Thermistors in temp sensors 'wear-out' by changing slightly in resistance from repeated cold-hot cycles.

Check for yourself by comparing Ω of a brand new one to an aged used one.
