Hello!

Lots of questions from me tonight!

Anyhu - since I have had this 206 (1.1 1999 L) It has run fine, The car sits at bang on or just under 90 degrees on any length of journey.

But after any length of journey, I will get out of the car and it smells like hot plastic.... The old owner said they hit a bag when they drove it which got stuck on the exhaust. But surely after owning it for over 2 months ish now and covering about 1500 miles that should have burnt off?

Any help as always very welcome.

Tommy

Ha car clone! Very Happy

I wonder what exactly is stinking after these journeys- I keep thinking of chucking various chemicals and parts at it to see if it gets better.

It is recently serviced (well a year ago but it has done about 2000 miles as it sat in a barn for a bit) very good history and well looked after - Its just odd!

Il chuck REDEX in it with a tank of the posh stuff - I dont think it will move any quicker, just might make it smell a bit healthier?

Im at a loss really - unless I should do an oil change due to it being sat ?

Its something I have always noticed on mine and just learned to live with it, Mine could do with an oil change, but I don't think it will make much difference about the smell, I've tried the really expensive BP stuff and redex and its done literally, nothing. I think its just some plastic or something in the engine bay getting hot, not that there is a lot of plastic to cover things in the L Laughing

Are you cleaning the engine with anything??
Is the exhaust new at all??
Are you thshing it??
Do the wheels/brakes smoke when you get out??
What coolant have you got in the system?keep this topped up and mixed with the right coolant/antifreeze to water ratio...it might be worth draining the coolant and radiator system but do it right and put good coolant/antifreeze back in..
Check for wiring or fasteners or plastic or the likes from touching the engine/radiator/piping/exhaust??
Make sure your belts are in good nick??

A very comprehensive and helpful reply Smile
no new exhaust that i know of, I dont think I rev it... possibly a bit more than my other car - Not racing it around though.
The brakes have never noticeably smoked but perhaps the rear drums are sticking to cause the smell?

The coolant is topped up but smells rank when looking into the bottle - perhaps this does need flushing out. It has had a new cam belt- but im not sure about the others.

Lots for me to check about this car!

Ah - in which case I wont go chucking pricey fuel at it - Its really confusing as to what causes it. Doesnt smell like overheating car (had a few of them in the past) just smells like burning plastic.

I will have a hunt around the above suggestions and see whats going on!

A burning clutch has a plasticy smell, just a thought.
Is the clutch pedal travel ok.
Not had a new clutch fitted recently, can smell a bit when being bedded in.

Its probably just your tyres doing there job..they are supposed to wear down as they grip...put your hand on one when youve driven 30mins to feel the heat...i remember reading somewhere about this smell that made perfect sense but i cant remember what it was...something like exhaust fumes, tyres, battery fumes...i will have a look around...
Its best to check them and eliminate what i said previously to be safe anyway..

As long as it isnt anything shockingly obvious - im happy Smile

It has had a new clutch yes - about 6000 miles ago. Clutch pedal seems fine - not too hard or jerky.

I will continue to hunt the previous suggestions Very Happy thanks again!

Mine always climbs to 90, even 100 sometimes in traffic. As soon as I get open and clear roads though, it will go down to 70/80. Me thinks it needs a good coolant flush soon.

Spot-on.
Cleaning additives smell horible and I've had this as well.
However he is describing a plastic smell and it would be worth having a good rumage-around incase he finds that bag.
