You might get away with a vice but a press is best.

Apologies, I should clarify, the main frame part is still on the car so we are trying to find solutions whereby we don't have to remove it from the car.

You can't. hub nut off, shaft out and then it can be fitted. Talking about £40 at a garage.

with a big socket think there 32mm
the other option is to butcher the origional one out and get a powerflex one which comes in 2 parts and is a 10 min job once the old one is out

You need a breaker bar and the correct socket for the hub nut. Hub then needs taking off the ball joint to give space to slide the shaft out. Need some gearbox oil too to top the box up as some will spill out.

You only need to take the shaft out if you are replacing the whole bracket assembly. I changed a back mount last year, you just cut through the outer ring of the old one and push it out, clean up the face then just tap the new one in

We've been trying for quite a while to tap it but have had no luck. Was there a special technique you used or is it just perseverance?

I just cleaned up the inner face, that's important, used some lub, made sure it's square to the hole and a suitable sized socket to knock it in. I even made up a threaded tool to go through the socket so I could pull it in if necessary but didn't need it.
You have got the right one haven't you? I only ask as there's a few different sizes.
If you're struggling you could put a chamfer on the leading edge and it really doesn't need to be that tight a fit in there as it isn't going anywhere once it's installed so you could rub down the mount outer ring surfaces

Yeah, we're pretty sure its the right size. And we did try the chamfer route. We've started to take the mount off now, we've taken four bolts off, can't see any more and the thing doesn't seem to want to shift. Are we missing something?

I didn't have to remove mine but I would expect there to be a couple of dowels there for alignment which may be holding up removal

So have you removed the driveshaft and attached bearing which is in the bracket too? That would jam it.
I would be very interested how to do it without removing the whole thing as I have two that need doing at the moment and dreading it tbh.
Any more specific instructions how to do it?
