Hi there ,Just need some advise!!??
seems I have a blown piston ring on my 1.4 hdi Sw,
and everyone tells me well garages that I need a new engine !!! ok my car has done a whopping 163000 but ,Really a new engine ??
Have just had the timing belt done, new maf, new egr, new rear axle bearings, new brakes new turbo,,,and now the piston ring pops!!
SO please can anyone give me some good new and advise ,or where to get a good recon engine or maybe a good mechanic in Essex,,
I await your reply's and will chug on as it were,

You could repair the bottom end, but its just not cost effective as the whole engine will need to be stripped down.
Another used engine is your best option here.
Unless you want to be paying mega bucks.

Depends what your take on the car is..
Rebuilding the bottom end with a head skim and gasket will ensure it's near enough good for x amount of miles. But then it costs more and there is just as much chance that something else could go with the top end.
It's more cost effective to gamble a little and just put another engine in. If you are lucky you could have saved yourself a hell of a lot, if you are unlucky it may happen again in a few months.
A reconditioned engine will cost a bomb, plenty of good running ones out there that can easily handle another 50k+. Finding the right one is not easy.
Impossible to guess really, it's up to you.

Or just confirm it is the rings and not a split liner or leaking valves....
Btw if it was my car and I was doing it myself. Drop the sump, push the pistons out from top and sllap a set of rings in at 80 odd quid, hone the bores. Jobs a gooden.
Would be the biggest bodge ever doing like that but its only a 1.4hdi so i wouldnt ideally care

+1 make sure it isn't a leaking valve rather than rings.
Regards just honing the bores that is still a big job for, what seems, an unskilled person. Still needs new cam belt and cam timing etc. as well as all new gasket set. Buy the honing tool and spend ages making sure there isn't carborundum inside the engine after the honing. The just wait for the big end or mains to go either because you weren't clean enough or just due to age. If you are going this far why not fit new big end / main bearing shells whilst you are there?
Also it's almost as much work getting the head and sump off in position as it is getting ready to remove the engine.
If you can do it yourself it is borderline deciding which way to do it but I personally think a second hand engine would be my way and you still have your old engine for spare parts you might need in the future.

Subbed. Interested to know what you went with. I was in the same boat, bought the car (1.1 1999), had HG blow on me the first month. A year later, rings died. Had a friend rebuild the bottom for me, complete second hand cylinders, new rings and another new HG. After 2k miles or so of great driving and no smoke, slowly starting to see some blue sh*t out of the exhaust on idle in heavy traffic. Next time I think I might just throw another engine in. I wish I had!

Hi there .I am still at the mo limping around although I am leaving some serious black smoke if I put me foot down, car is loosing power and feels like a ship to drive ??
I am at present maybe looking to scrape her and invest in something newer ,, It does seem ridiculous how much an engine is , new or second hand, I have had quotes ranging from 1 too 2 grand for a rebuild and with the no real guarantee's of a good 2nd hand engine I am kinda in a real quandary!!!

Hi there, sorry for long delay in answering I am at the moment working away during the week ,Unfortunately I do not have the skills to do my self, I am a tinkerer and can do most little jobs, I also have a passion for old scooters ,and a mechanical back ground ,but an engine rebuild just do not have the knowledge space or tools so am indeed under the get it done at a garage category ,DOH! still chugging along though, bit like batman with the smoke screen sometimes

Garage price will almost certainly make it uneconomical whatever is done.
Getb a replacement car. 206s are now VERY cheap. Diesels hold a premium but good petrol ones are very affordable indeed. Don't be fooled by Ebay dealer asking prices - watch a few private auctions to completion or look at the private asking prices on Thames Valley Trader and you will get a better idea of the real price of these cars.
