I've been offered replacement filters but so far none of housings have been openable. Some cheaper units need the heater from the old unit. I replace the unit once a year.

Just checked Haynes manuel for you, it says on some 1.4hdi models the filter/housing may come as a complete assembly, check with dealer first.
Maybe upload a photo, and someone might know which type you have got.
Or look in service box.

It's a complete unit on the 1.4 hdi ... the black plastic canister at the back of the right hand end of the engine with several pipes going in and out. About £50-60 I think.
Never changed ours in 10 years!

Well in your car model, you need to change the whole unit, and here is a pic of it,and what do when you get it:
About changing the fuel filter,in your car case,it will be a whole full unit, you take the fuel lines off,by pressing on the lock (colored square),then take the plugs off the (Water Sensor in Gasoil Filter),and (Fuel Reheater),then have the filter out,you need to reuse the water sensor and reheater from the old filter, then fix them tight, and fix the fuel filter back on the bracket, plug the fuel line back, and then before you do anything, you need to make sure that the new fuel filter if full of Diesel, and to do so,you need to squeeze the system with the hand pump,so you prime it,and you need to keep squeezing until the prime hand pump get hard and you will be unable to squeeze it anymore, then start the car,and it will be fine Smile
