Hi Guys,

Can anyone either confirm or tell me what this fault means?

'P2097 - Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Too Rich (Bank 1)'

If this is correct, what does it mean & how can it be fixed?

Got this from another website, don't know if it's correct but:

- Exhaust leak near O2 sensor
- Faulty O2 sensor
- Fuel contamination

I have Peugeot Planet/DiagBox.

Previous Car: Peugeot 206 1.4
Now: Peugeot 207 1.6 VTi 120 Sport

Thanks for the quick response - the catalyst + all sensors were replaced on the 26th Feb 2013. 1 couldn't have gone already surely?

Which sensor is the oxygen one? Actually may have just answer my own question - the one POST (after) catalyst? Is that accessed from underneath? Should be easy enough to check if there holes or gaps near there - shouldbe blowing right?

Be worth checking the intank filter for s**te?

Are there any other people with systems who can check this error code?

Basically what Hawkers said.

You could get the live data read to see what the lambda sensor is throwing out (and see if the pre cat sensor is high).
What make of cat and lambda did you have fitted? Both should still be under guarantee, so would be looking at getting replacements. Do it now as in the first 6 months you do not have to prove they are faulty, the supplier has to prove they aren't.

Cheers guys,

Just done a bit of digging & have found my MOT's emissions test data 28/05/13

Lambda Limit - 0.97/1.03 & mine = 1.01 - PASS

HC limit 200 - mine = 0 - PASS

CO limit - 0.20 - mine = 0.02 - PASS

Wasn't sure if this data would prove/disprove the findings? But maybe a leak near the sensor as suggested?

I will get a live test done asap & get the downpipe checked for leaks but the fault code has been cleared - Should I be expecting it to appear again soon?

A leak (hole or gasket failure) in the exhaust in front of the lambda sensor will allow in O2. The sensor will "see" the excess O2 and send that signal to the ecu and the ecu will think the engine is not getting enough fuel. The ecu will add extra fuel until the reading at the lambda sensor is within pre-determined limits. The excess fuel will quite quickly destroy your cat.

It could also be a leaking or defective injector. Again the fault was not there at test time.

It could be incomplete burn of fuel caused by failing plug or coil pack. In this case you would probably feel the misfire.

It could be a split breather pipe on the intake.

From your MOT readings the fault was not there at test time.

I think I have given the defects in the most likely order.

kandlbarret - I had another emissions test yesterday - lamda was & co2 were over the limit but only on idle. Can also hear a very faint blowing from the exhaust.

Also had a compression test done as the mechanic thought it could be injector related but he said I was getting factory compression.

Im not getting any misfires. Only symptoms are poor throttle response/reduced performance & the exhaust flumes smelling of neat fuel. But no noticeable change in fuel consumption.

What do you mean by breather pipe? Fuel breather pipe?

Cant remember the make of the cat or sensors but they weren't originals. All replacements were from EuroCar Parts. Slightly worried that all this could be damaging my cat! Bearing in mind all was replaced at the same time back in Feb & wasn't cheap!

You must fix the blowing exhaust before doing any more fault finding.

Scrunch up a rag and put it over the exhaust tail pipe blocking the exhaust outlet flow while a mate looks under the car and around the exhaust. This usually makes any leak really easy to find as the blocked tail pipe will make all the gases try to get out of the leak.

Yes if there is so much fuel that you can smell it it won't be doing your cat much good!

I would try and stay away from euro car parts, they might be cheap but there's a saying "you only get what you pay for"

The garage I worked for before moving to bmw used them and we had nothing but problems, Parts not fitting correctly cars coming back a week later with same fault and so on .

Sorry I've taken so long to reply but the car is finally sorted! The problem was infact a fault lamda sensor & was replaced free of charge. The exhaust leak was a loose/rusty clamp, just infront of the mid section silencer. Drove to work this morning - cars feels much more responsive, quieter & used far less fuel than the day before.

Quick question though guys, as its been running rich for many 000's miles, other than replacing spark plugs is it worth cleaning/replacing anything else?

if the car feels fine probably not. The only thing I would suggest (suggest not insist) is to clean the plugs.

However, as it is starting fine modern fuels and oils will, over time, clean the plugs for you. Personally I would clean them but that is only because I can DIY.

I decided to replace spark plugs, change oil/filter & clean up k & n air filter. Needed to be serviced shortly anyway. Runs much better but I've noticed noticed the shocks are leaking oil & the wishbones are starting to knock - LOVE french cars - always something to do! Very Happy

IOf you think about it the "shock absorbers" on a car are springs. I think you mean your dampers are leaking oil.

Yes I am a pedant.

Dampers and bottom wishbones aren't to bad on these provided:-

1) You don't rip the bottom swivel joint dust seal reassembling everything.
2) You have a 6ft length of scaffold pole.
3) You don't damage the drive shaft gaiters.
4) You don't damage the drive shaft / gearbox oil seals. (Have a tray handy as it is really easy for a shaft to pop out of the gearbox and your gear oil to end up all over your drive.
5) Be prepared for your anti-rollbar drop links to be siezed meaning you will have to cut them off or get a nut splitter on them. To be honest whilst doing this work you may as well fit new drop links.
6) You will need new pinch bolts for the bottom swivels.
7) Check that you have the heat shields on the bottom swiwel joints. On lots of these cars they rust and fall off or bad mechanics don't refit them. If they aren't fitted the heat from your brakes will quickly destroy your bottom swivel joints.
Cool When fitting new wishbones I always very carefully remove the top spring clip on the new bottom swivel and add extra moly or silicone grease, the manufacturers are very skimpy here. Though be aware that it is easy to split the boot refitting the clip. Which ever you choose the risk is yours!
