Hi!

Just bought a 2001 206 GTI. Great car. At least that is until it started smelling strongly of petrol, particularly after filling up the tank.

I've checked and there are no evident leaks from the tank or under the car.

Also to add is that It has no oil in it at all, which I'd checked when I bought it. After picking it up and putting fuel in it on the way home, the smell started and I noticed that the engine bay was very hot. Hot to the point that there was a little vapour mist/smoke coming out when I took off the oil cap.

Clearly it is in need of a service, which I will be doing this weekend, but could this be the cause of the smell? If there's no oil, will the engine burn through more petrol and make a smell because it's working so hard? It's going to have new antifreeze, oil and filter, fuel filter and air filter this weekend, but just wanted to check if anyone had any other ideas?

Thanks!

if the oil is hot when you take the cap off im sure its normal to see a little bit of steam/smoke/vapour what ever you want to call it.... But you did say it had no oil in it at all, did you drive it home with out any oil? cause that would be very bad and your very lucky it hasn't seized the engine...

It had some oil in it, it was just low. I'm guessing it's been run on a budget for a bit so I doubt the oil has been topped up or changed in a while, along with all the other fluids and filters. I just wondered whether this could cause the engine to run hot and subsequently eat through petrol.

Checked fuel pump, seal at fuel cap, fuel tank and first part of fuel lines, nothing. It only seems to happen once the engine is hot, so would a broken fuel injector be a main culprit?
