When my pug is idling It sounds a bit like a diesel. This goes away when I put on some revs and during normal driving. It just seems to be there at idle. The sound seems to be coming from the engine bay but I cant pin point it. Its a 1.4 petrol 04 plate. Any ideas on what it could be greatly appreciated.

Try to upload a recording may be easier for someone to diagnose?

Have you looked at the basics? When was it last serviced? Oil change, plugs etc?

How many miles are on the clock and when, if at all have the timing belt and water pump been changed?

What condition is the aux belt in?

Just a few easy things to check / consider.

I've had a blowing exhaust before Macca. From my experiences they got worse under acceleration etc? What do you think?

If it is a diesel its been working quite well on petrol lol.

It is due a service the service countdown is going down pretty quick its MOT is due next month so ill get it done then. I had the timing belt and water pump done last year and its got just over 50k on the clock. The Aux belt looks ok but im starting to think it may be the exhaust the noise seems to be coming from underneath

I think you can check by blocking the exhaust with a rag and looking for leaks. May need to get someone to confirm though before you do it.

I may give that a go as long as it doesnt make anything explode lol. If not It looks like a trip to the garage. Hopefully not too expensive a fix since ive got the MOT next month and there's bound to be something else needing done.

Thanks for your help guys

Get down at the side of the car and have a listen. You might also see some blackness if it is blowing. You could always put you hand near the joints to see if you feel any air blowing, but remember the exhaust might be hot. As Karl says, you can always use the rag method. easiest way is to get a mate to hold a scrunched up up rag over the tailpipe while you have a listen/look/feel. It doesn't do any damage to the car as the pressure in the exhaust will move the hand out of the way before any damage can be done.

I know what you mean Karl, but if it's just a small leak, noise isn't always that noticeable when under power. Not sure if it's the faster air flow or what. Mine was blowing from where the gearbox mounting bracket and could only hear it at idle.

OP, if your MOT doesn't expire for another month, consider putting the car in early. You can present it upto a month before expiry and as long as you have the previous certificate, they can put upto 13 months MOT on the car if it passes. If it fails, you have the extra time to do the repairs while still being able to drive the car around.
