I'm going to tackle the dreaded torsion bar at the weekend, i've had a look at a few threads and how to's on here but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Very Happy

Plus Gas is best. Don't hit the end of the torsion bar as you'll chew them up. Take the screws out, remove the washers and put the screws back in. Hit them instead because they can be replaced.
2001 GTi 138, Bilstein Sprint dampers, H&R springs, 21mm Peugeot Sport torsion bars, 22mm rear ARB, Peugeot Sport Group A wishbones, 283mm discs, Goodridge stainless hoses, Maniflow 304 grade 4-2-1 2.5" manifold and system, 200 cell cat, Richard Longman head, 45mm Jenvey throttle bodies, 9.5mm TB spacers, 90mm air horns, Jenvey throttle linkage, Jenvey fuel rail, Aeromotive and Goodridge fuel fittings and braided hose, ITG sausage filter, Radtec custom radiator, Piper Ultimate Road cams, Piper vernier pulleys, Omex 600 ECU. Saxo electric PAS pump, Vibra Technics engine mounts. Samco coolant hoses, TTV steel flywheel, 4.76 final drive ratio, 307 CC 180 ratios. 2019 BMW 530i. 2017 Mercedes C300 convertible.

I would probably screw some nuts to the back too then tighten it up against the bar to avoid trashing the thread.

I would use hex head bolts not the torx ones, otherwise you end up just mashing them which makes them difficult to remove.

Just put them in hand tight...won't get any tighter than that.

I mean when you smash them to get the bars out, will end up not being to get the torx bit in

You don't need to if they are hand tight. A hammer and chisel will easily remove them if they get stuck.

No matter how hard you hit them, decent hex bolts won't get damaged so isn't much point trying to compromise

I find the top mount ones are fine, nice and short thread saves time screwing them in and out.
