Done searching and found a few things that it could be but still not really found 'my' answer.
The car cold or hot on idle is spot on doesn't make any strange noises although the idle is very slightly lumpy.

Its only when accelerating the engine taps/ticks and it is starting to get on my nerves now as it sounds like the car is F**ked

Just done a service
total quartz oil 5w40- new oil filter
bosch super4 plugs
and the rest but not really relavant to the engine
Just thinking new oil and plugs might rule out them being any problem

So anyone got an idea what i can do to fix this tractor noise?

Long shot, but could be the cam shaft, or the valves needing adjusting.

What engine and year? My early gti 137 does that on acceleration. The exhaust manifold is the cause of mine, as the plates inside are loose. I'm waiting till I have to do other work before I weld it quiet!

The manifold issue is a common problem but it doesn't sound like tapping or like a tractor, its more of a rattle, if you've got tapping it wont be the manifold.

Tapping is most likely the lifters if coming from the head, but it doesn't mean it's certainly needs attention unless there are other symptoms apparent.

My old xsi tapped like a bag of nails, and so does my rallye but still pulls like a train and drives nice so I don't worry about it.

could consider doing an engine flush if your engine is worn/dirty. The manufacturers advertises those flushes as a way to soften engine ticks.

But do it at your own risk though, there's a strong divide between people who think its good and bad.

If it does turn out to be your exhaust manifold (or for anyone who does a search in the future) then here's a useful link for you that shows how to repair it
