Recently had to pull over on A1 due to my car losing all acceleration over a 2 minute period (scary). RAC diagnosed it as misfiring and said it was either my coil pack or injector (I know nothing about engines). After changing the coil pack and spark plugs to no avail I was told I would need to go to a local garage to have a new injector fitted at a cost of £142 (fair enough, just want to go home). After 2 hours I was told the new injector had not solved the problem and I would need to go to a dealer. The dealer's diagnostic found 4 faults and fixed them for a charge of £514, however this still hasn't stopped the misfiring!?
I have now been informed it could be an ECU issue and could cost another £800+, is this something people are aware of!? Can the garage seriously charge me all that when they haven't fixed the problem yet?? Is there anything I can do to reduce this cost?
The nightmare is that my car is around 200 miles from my home so I'm at the mercy of the garage as it is not an option to get it to a garage nearer my home.

Did you give the dealer the authority to carry out the work to fix the faults they found, and did they give you a written estimate on price?
If no estimate was in place, then officially you haven't entered into a contract with them, so you could argue about the cost is excessive and pay what you believe is a reasonable price.
I would be asking for the proof that the faults were there in the first place. Very easy to just throw parts on a car and say that they were replacing faulty ones. In the eyes of the law, you still own the old parts taken off your car, so you could ask for them back and have them checked.
They have you over a barrel really if your car is so far away from you. They can just hold onto the car until payment has been made.
It might be cheaper to pay a recovery company to collect your car and transport it to your home and then you can try and sort the problem yourself, but if it is the ECU, then it's not an straight forward fix as you need the dealer software. Also pretty sure you need to change the BSI and immo chip too, but plenty of second hand kits knocking about.

Thanks for the help. Yeah they did say beforehand that the faults had come up and that it would be that price. How likely is it that changing the ecu will fix it? What if it doesn't, I don't think there's anything else they could try.

SO the RAC is assuming here and does not KNOW!

SO again, a PEUGEOT dealer has not understood what the problem is but fixed something else instead! BUT not the actual problem!.....and they call themselves a PEUGEOT DEALER???

SO the conclusion is.....THEY DON'T KNOW do they?.....
So if they don't know what the problem is, then HOW can they fix it?????why are they ASSUMING!.....yet you are caught in it.

SHOUTING IS NOT REQUIRED
Diagnostic, or do you mean the health check? We need by far more information from you to find whos at fault. If the peugeot dealer is a dealer there will always be a reason behind the charges.
And normally (if it was me) the car would be fixed, or atleast the customer told what it is or needs to be eliminated to test further

If it is your ECU, my brother had one refurbed a few years ago by www.the-ecu-doctor.co.uk/
Seemed to have done a decent job in that it worked as soon as it was refitted to his car and cost a lot less than £800.

The dealership has sent my car to someone who can determine whether I need to repair or replace my ecu for a further charge of £84...

Did you authorize them to send your car to them? If I was you I would have got the car towed to a trusted mechanic how has experience with peugeots

Yeah I authorised it, they said it was that or pay for a brand new one for 1100 so didn't really have an option... Hope they can repair it

Update, after I had to ring the garage, it turns out the ECU came back clear and they are currently reading a manual to think of the next step. Its been 20 days!! I havent been given a courtesy car or anything, is there any chance they will reduce my current bill for this? They dont know what to do! What will happen if they cant fix it?? Its with Robins and Day, who seem like a reputable Peugeot dealer as far as I can tell?

The dealer has now finally, after 27 days, fixed a wiring fault that has stopped the misfiring. They have changed my coil pack and pressure sensor too which they claim were also intermittently faulty. Im getting these parts back but is it worth getting these checked at a nearby garage to see if they are faulty?

Even if they are faulty are you going to chase the garage for your money back? if you are determined to do that and have the bill reduced then yes, do it.

Eventually got my car home last week. turned out to be a wiring fault that has in total cost me around £700.
