Rear anti roll bar keeps coming loose

The GTI180 I've been working on has been having this problem for quite a while now. The rear anti roll bar starts making this cling sound on bumps and corners after a while it has been tightened back up.

The car owner kept tightening the arb flange to trailing arm 13mm bolt now and then but it kept coming loose, sometimes it even dropped off.

It's not that the flanges come loose from the bar itself, they stay in their place. Last summer we did a rear axle overhaul on the car and removed the arb from the car. I adjusted the arb flange to trailing arm clearance to 1mm like said in Peugeot technical documents I have.. No use, still starts making cling sounds after driving over a few bumps.

I've tried to tighten that 13mm bolt all the way I think is safe before it snaps, even using some loctite on the threads but still, "cling!" after a while.

I've also tried what happens when I pull the flange all the way it goes on the arb but same results. Last time I tried adding a small washer between the flange and the trailing arm on that 13mm bolt and it was quiet for a little longer but then again, started clinging.

I remember I had a similar problem with my 306 S16 like 10 years ago, it didn't make any sounds but it kept loosing that bolt. Then when driving around a corner I noticed the car handled weirdly and checked the rear, the bolt was missing from other side and the arb wasn't working. It got sorted by changing that bolt to a longer one (a very long one) and adding some thread locking compound on the threads. Maybe I'll try this next.

Anyone else having similar trouble? Or has anyone come up with a solution for this, why it keeps happening..

I did a full rear axle overhaul on my moms 1.4 a couple of months ago, and of course removed and installed arb during the repair. It didn't develop a similar habit. The 13mm bolts holding the flanges on the trailing arms don't loosen up..

If you are confident there are no underlying problems then get some decent replacement high tensile bolts to go in there. Loctite them, tighten them up and then put a small tack weld on the arb end plate/trailing arm. Im not talking about going nuts with the welder, just a small tack will suffice and if you need to remove it again you can do easily.

Had a thought about tack welding also before.

Should there be a washer on the 13mm bolt between the arb flange and the trailing arm? I remember that my moms 1.4 had one and it was in factory condition (as she has owned that car since new, car is 2006 model). This GTI180 didn't have those and neither has any of the 206s I've come across during the years. I've even got 3 206 spare axles (early gti, 1.4 hdi and sw) around the carage and not one of them had these washers under the flange.

Maybe I'll go with strong new, a tad longer bolts, tighten them with thread locker and tack weld 'em on the flange. If it doesn't work, I'll shoot myself in the head Very Happy

I don't think it does have a washer between the end plate and trailing arm, not off the top of my head anyway, will look tomorrow as the car is on the ramp at the moment anyway! haha.
Yeah that plan sounds good (apart from the shooting in the head Wink ), i had a similar issue with a 106 gti a few years ago and it solved that.

You can buy different strength Loctite. It might be worth trying a tougher setting one.

Interesting, I'll have to check if they have a reseller in Finland. But with this one car, I think I'll stick with the plan said before.

I would try some locking washers and some strong locktight. failing that i would weld it

Checked Servicebox for info about the washer between the flange and the trailing arm. Some later models, like my moms car have a flexible washer there.

FLEXIBLE WASHER 8X17-0,8 - SINCE RPO 10388, spare part no. 6962 13.

had a same fault with my 206 in the end it was the anti roll bar was not in the splines in the other side the car. once in properly just loctite the bolt have not have a problem since
