I had a loose filter box at the weekend so I fixed it on sunday. I noticed whilst doing it how low the intake is....my eyes nearly popped out. my question is how can I make this higher? I looked at cone filters but I don't really want the induction noise (its a 1.4 with wheel trims...not really got the looks for that). with the heavy rain and deep puddles imminent I don't fancy an engine replacement.
any ideas?

the air intake itself is inside the wing ABOVE the wheel. it should be sealed all way from the filter to there,if you have that bit missing then all you can do is replace/refit it or as you say, cone filter

if I take the air filter out I can see straight to the floor...obviously an important bit missing. would a universal cone filter make it noisy or do you think it would be bearable?

depends in how heavy your right foot is to whether you think it is bearable but those universal ones can be quite noisey

In that case your resonator is missing.
It get's broken (it's a whole other tuned box) where it joins with the air box inlet at the bottom, and also some people take it off.
Get one from eBay; I did and it's quiet like a BMW.
