I've had my 206 6 months now 1999 1.1 lx 43k on the clock and I have every service sheet since it left the factory bought it off a elderly woman for £300 as she reversed into a bollard and it bent out the rear quarter. A quick weld and bog later it flew through its mot with only an advisory for a tyre. In my eyes its a brilliant buy.

Unfortunately the past few days the engine has started a tapping noise a very constant tap, tap, tap when idle. All the fluids look ok the oil is a bronze-light brown shade and is topped up does anyone recognise any problems here someone mentioned tappets to me which sounded scary.

I love the car and would even consider a engine change in order to keep it as my brother and dad are mechanics but my car knowledge goes as far as oil levels and changing wheels.

thanks for reading the essay but i was wondering if anyone could help thanks

the tu engine always sounds abit tappety, nothing out of the norm, very robust engine and will very very easily see over 100k without any maintenance other than servicing

aha thank you im going to give it a thorough service filters and all and maybe make my idle higher as it sounds like it might konk out sometimes as it idles around 800rpm this is when the tapping is most noticable.

Idle is not adjustable and is controlled by the ECU only (non-programable either).

Tap noise could be a number of things including inlet or exhaust valve(s) clearance adjustment (tappets).

I would just service it, then let it settle for 800 miles or so.

im not too good with motors but the etorx screw on the throttle body controls the idle right ?
I thought it did this by not allowing the throttle back as far therefore hightening the idle
