Hi,

car has whinning noise coming from engine bay. More noticable when car is cold. Noise only happens when you press the accelerator. This happens when in gear or neutral.

Took it to local garage today to show him but by the time I got there it had vanished as car was warmed up a bit.

Any ideas?

no,but you have to spray it on the center of the pulley, and don't touch the pulley surface,as this will cause the belt to be slipping.

Dont use wd40!

It will cause the belt to slip, heat up and rip. Also causing rubber to melt to your auxiliary belt pulleys which is not fun to clean off!

UPDATE - found out what the noise was. There was no fluid in the power steering. My mechanic topped it up and said keep any eye on level. no noise now but probably leak somewhere.

Weekly checks on the fluid levels could have prevented this. It's amazing how many people only lift the bonnet when something goes wrong or in some cases never lift it.

A leak would be fairly obvious. Check all the pipes and connections for signs of fluid. If there is oil on them, clean it off and then recheck in a couple of days. Tracing spray can also be useful to identify where a leak is if it's not immediately obvious.
