would a 138 gti engine loom connect to my 1.4 8v interior loom or would I have to have the dash out and change that loom as well

Break out the relevant wiring diagrams & make yourself a big pot of tea.

GTI conversions have been done to death, it's far easier & cheaper to buy a factory GTI these days.

Im getting a gti at end of the month, but the body works not great on it and mines is in good nick and is solid underneath so Im thinking about putting the engine and bit in to my car.

Well then, strip both back the the shell, and swap everything over
