Hi there,
I have a 2003 Gti 180. I notice the gearbox whine when the car is decelerating in gears 2, 3 and 4. It doesn't whine when it is accelerating or maintaining speed.
Also the gear selection is fine and have not had any problems getting it into gear.
The whine isnt that loud and I can't hear it if the music is above about volume level 6.
I have changed the gear oil but that didn't seem to make any difference. It whined less right after the oil change but it then returned to its previous state.
Thanks for any help...

At a guess I would say it's your gearbox bearing. Sounds similar to the problem I use to have.

Took it to a friends garage and had a new gearbox put it, picked up one from a breakers yard with less then 12,000 miles on it. But I'm sure there is an easier fix.

I thought it's the flywheel and conpletely normal behaviour, for me HDi 2.0 it's mostly heard in 3rd when foot off pedal.
Even Moscowitch had the same flywheel gearboxes making that whine
correct me if im wrong, would happily gwt rid of whine

i can hear a gearbox whine mostly when engine braking on 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. When im accelerating on those gears i dont hear anything as well (or perhaps its minimal and drowned out by the engine noise). 4th and 5th are perfectly fine for me.
I've always been unsure if this is normal or if the bearings are wearing off.

The last one I tested was a clatter on over run and not a whine. That was f****d planet and sun wheels in the diff
its probably bearing failure, either replace the box or have it rebuilt

OK that one sounds pretty bad. Anyone got any advice or recommendations for a rebuild? The box seems fine other than this so seems silly to change it. Also had a new clutch fitted about 2 years ago.
