Where abouts on the gearbox will I find the ID number? Is it fairly obvious, as I haven't seen it when changing the oil etc

Do you mean the serial number or model number? I think it's a BE4 5 speed box

My box is whining quite loudly in gear so I am swapping it for another which I am buying off a member on here. His is off a 2003 gti 180 and mine is also a 2003 180 so I just wanted to check it was similar model number.
I know there are a few threads on here but the subject seems a little confused as to whether they are interchangeable.

It's on the front face of the gearbox below the battery.
Ignore the code pictured but this is where it's found.
