In need of some help. I've recently been given a 2002 1.1 206 and it's failed it's MOT because of emission problems. Not to sure on what exactly but I've heard it's quite a common problem. Does anyone know any information that could help me fix this?

If anyone can shed any light on the matter, it'll be much appreciated.

Thank you, Eliot

Topic moved to 206 Problems..

How much did it fail by was it just? Sometimes you can get away with it by Making sure the engine is red hot and also by changing the fuel to the premium stuff, Will only make a difference though if its just failed.

Granville 10k boost, sprays through the air intake, someone at the throttle while someone sprays through the intake, loads of black smoke should come out.

Then take for a run, high revs low gears, like iainlovatt says when you take it for the MOT make sure he tests the emmisions first with the engine upto tempersture.

Mine failed last year with an enormous reading
Garage discovered a crack in the exhaust manifold
Fitted one from a scrapped car and problem solved for me

Do you have ALL the emission's data reading's from the test?

If you do then post them up.

As Mr.BSI post the readings.
As sproggy check for exhaust leaks - that is the most common reason for emissions failure.

Last service at 60k , had a problem with it's exhaust, supposed to have had a cat replacement, coil pack had been replaced. As far as information goes on it's records, i don't really know much about the car.. :/ the woman who gave me this car said that her exhaust was hanging off almost and she had no clue. i know she had a small crash where the radiator had to be replaced. This is as much information as i can give, relevant to the topic i'm not so sure, but if anyone knows any common faults. or things to check, such as exhaust leaks (thank you, will check those) then anythings helpfull at the moment

To test for exhaust leak get a rag and scrunch it up, start car and put rag over the end if the exhaust. Have a friend look and listen under the bonnet and under the car for leaks. The smallest hole can result in an emissions failure so look and listen carefully though be careful not to get burnt as the exhaust will quite quickly get hot.

Alright! so, i've got the results from the last MOT. First idle test: fail. CO:1.04%
second idle: fail. CO 1.69% and lambda failed, 0.949. natural idle test, pass. is this going to be any problem or will it just need a clean up and long drive?

The car is using excess fuel or not burning the fuel properly.

That can be any one or a whole list of items:-

Blocked air inlet filter
Exhaust leak.
Leaking injector.
Failing spark plug or coilpack.
Defective Mass Air Pressure (MAP) sensor.
Defective Mass Air Temperature (MAT) sensor.
Thermostat stuck open and car running cold.
Defective wather temperature sensor. The sensor to ecu is a different sensor than the one that sends the signal to the gauge so a godd gauge reading doesn't mean the ecu sensor is working correctly.

If you have checked for exhaust leakes my advice is:-

Read engine ECU fault codes. Best way to do this is a cheap scanner from ebay, clear all existing codes, take the car for a good drive and re-read the codes.

Also check how each cylinder is performing. Buy a cheap infrared temperature sensor, measure the temperature of each exhaust manifold; the one with a temp significantly different to the rest is likely to be the problem spark plug or injector.

Alternatively take it to a garage and have them diagnose (from free to about £50) and then take the diagnosis to a knowledgeable mate who will do the fix a lot cheaper than the garage.
